I haven't the first clue as to what a typical 10yo girl is into.

Spending about 30pounds.

My friends girl of 10 now nearly 11 always loves when I buy her clothes , or ice skating stuff. If she has a hobby thats always a good bet

Wotzsaname · 22/05/2007 20:21

book vouchers!

Wotzsaname · 22/05/2007 20:22

boots the chemist vouchers!

[girly stuff]

JoanCrawford · 22/05/2007 20:24

thanks floss. Clothes is good but I find the age sooooo hard. They don't want to be sweet little girly but they are still far too young for the vamp look (ten years too young imo!)

Where do you buy fashionable clothes for a 10yo?

I would go tp GAP or H & M.
I steer away from tarty stuff IYKWIM , and tend to go sporty or beach wear, at this time of year. She always seems thrilled ,her little brother always tells her to open my pressie last cos it will be the best!! God knows how that goes down with her Mum and Dad

hamma · 22/05/2007 20:30

take her to new look and spend £30 on her she'll have a great time - clare's Accessories is another good bet. - hair straighteners?

JoanCrawford · 22/05/2007 20:31

no no no, come baaaaaack!

thanks for your input wotz.

tbh book vouchers were my first thought. But I remembered how I felt at 10 when I received book vouchers for my birhtday. I distinctly remember thinking, 'christ, you must really hate me!' when my aunt presented them . I am now the aunt, and so wanted to be the cool, hip and super trendy aunt that DIDN'T buy book vouchers .

thanks for the suggestion though.

How about taking her out for lunch somewhere and having a girly day i did it for my niece and she loved it felt very grown up ordering her own food off the menu etc

JoanCrawford · 22/05/2007 20:32

hair straightners, yes yes yes, good one. Poor child is 'blessed' with a candy floss fuzz and I know she'd pass out with excitement if I got her hair straighners. thank you.

Our staple gift nowadays is a pretty/funky T shirt from Gap (can often get them in the sale), with either a headband, a bracelet, some nice stationery stuff, or a book.

We always get given - craft sets (which drive me mad tbh; they sit around for ages leering, then we have to do them, then whatever creative thing they've made sits around for ages leering at us!).

Other good things - Claire's Accessories voucher - what 10 year old wouldn't love to just have a tenner to spend in there on whatever sparkly tat they want? A book token. Hair stuff. A plate of cookies with pink icing. Starbucks voucher - my 10 year old would LOVE that!!!!

Surfermum · 22/05/2007 20:33

MP3 player?

Gap hoodie?

rantinghousewife · 22/05/2007 20:34

Accessories, think trendy scarves, nice handbags etc.

PandaG · 22/05/2007 20:34

Yes lilyloo - I've done that for my goddaughter and she loved it so did her mum!

JoanCrawford · 22/05/2007 20:35

ooh she'd like that too LilyLoo. So will I! Think I will sound out her mum, but am pleased I asked. Was starting to panic.

I have an 11 year old dd and she would just love to have a day out and a trip to H&M. Their clothes are very reasonable and not at all tarty. It is the the best place for pre-teens imho!

LilyLoo · 22/05/2007 20:39

Maybe tie it in with a bit of shopping then she could choose something too. Am sure her mum would love it be glad of a sitter for the day.

Wotzsaname · 22/05/2007 20:40

I have nephews who only want games for their pc's

Sophies or Mark One...they like it for some odd reasons because their mates all have the same stuff.

pointydog · 22/05/2007 20:43

charm bracelet

JoanCrawford · 22/05/2007 20:47

thanks everyone. Great suggestions, all of them.

My first ever thread on mn and I thought no one would reply, so, er, cheers!

purpleduck · 22/05/2007 21:00

cash

Wotzsaname · 22/05/2007 21:07

JoanCrawford sorry I was so highly strung, no harm intended. I think £30 is generous as an aunt.

I allow £20 for each of my nephews.

Nice thread..
