Alison, all the seat belts in US cars are like yours, in that they lock once you pull them out all the way. That way when you install a regular car seat, the seat can't move about. I was very surprised that cars in the UK don't have that as a standard feature.

Kateandthegirls its the first time I'd come across seat belts like this, and my dad's new car doesn't have it so I guess its not likely to become a standard feature here for a few years. Its a shame because I think its a great idea

I put my dd in a booster seat at 4 because she grew out of her car seat (tall for age). It is a Britax one and has a little adjustable strap attached with a red clip which keeps the car seat belt off the neck. She is still using it at age 7.
