It is something Ive been thinking of for a while (if I didnt have kids, might even think about the regular army).
dh says he will and I quote 'absolutely not stand for any of this army nonsense, I let you get away with murder but i am putting my foot down on this one'

I would like to join as a student nurse, and have been asked by another student I know to go to a 'bring a friend' evening.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience/info??

Dhj is in teh regular army but actually works with a TA regiment right now (basically to train tehm, etc...)....he is away in Afghanistan right now, but should be home on R&R next week (well, he is hoping to be here by Wednesday, lol...but Brize Norton and their planes...well...I believe it when I see it, lol)....anyway, maybe he can give you some INfo

Thanks 3 that would be great.

Basically I want to know things like how likely is it that I'm gonna be called up to go to somewhere like Iraq/Afghan (cos Ive heard conflicting reports) and as a TA member can you choose not to go?
Do you have to sign up like the regular army for a certain amount of time that is difficult to get out of?
Do they take family into account (e.g. dh is main breadwinner so therefore I have a lot of family responsibility)

oh theres loads but any help would be great thanks

My husband was in it when he was a student at university.

You won't get called to Iraq and if you got offered it you wouldn't have to go, the commitment is one weekend a month, it's nothing like the regular army commitment wise. I think the commitment was one weekend in 5 ? but not sure.

This was the situation 5 years ago and my husband loved it, he earned money, got to go on (no-compulsory) trips to Africa to help in a children's camp, Alaska to build something(?).

Look at website, they shoud have more up to date info. My husband was a PT instructor in the TA so there's lots of different types of jobs.

They do lots of excellent community projects too.

Hope you get the info you're looking for.

my bro is in the TA and enlisted to go on their tour to iraq in June, it was volutary and he has since decided he doesnt want to go (because of a new gf) all he had t odo was tell them why, main reason he put as my mum was likely to have a heart attack (which was true) and they have said 'no problem'

mosschops30 · 16/05/2007 22:09

wow thanks for that info. I have looked on the website and its all pretty confusing saying you will be called for operations (or words to that effect) within 5 years, but yes I had heard you could opt out as it were.

Any more info I would love to know, what sort of things you do, trips abroad, whats the training like etc etc

Thanks
