I have a laptop that I sit in front of the tv whilst Im on it. Just checking up with mumsnet when the most HUGEST spider came crawling at me from under the tv. I screamed, slammed my laptop shut, and threw (not really) dd onto the sofa. It got scared and went back under. I put my trainers on as I usually just stand on them, but when it came back out, it was MASSIVE!!! Its legs were so long and they were longer than my fingers. I was terrified of standing on it, so I threw a carpet over it and stood on it that way. But problem is, Im too scared to lift up the carpet again to see if its dead. I feel like it's crawling over me!! EWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME SOMEONE!!!!!!!!!! HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you need to stop one fast, to get enough time to get a glass, always scream at them. It nearly always stops them in their tracks!!!!

Hi Tammybear,
I totally understand, I'm absolutely terrified of spiders!!
In our previous flat, we always seemed to have huge spiders around August and September, so big that I actually considered leaving the country for those months!!(I used to put a glass bowl over them until dh came back home, as a glass would mean getting too close to them...)
We moved to a house since with a garden (which worried me spider-wise..), and after a couple of them appearing, I bought a insect repellent device from Maplin (they have a few, but one of them specifically says for spiders as well). Have to say, it's not September yet, but since then I haven't found any in the house (apart from a couple of tiny ones the other day). Hope I'm not pushing my luck here and they all appear tomorrow!!

Hope this helps.

Don't read any further if you're frightened of spiders! I always check under the pillows and duvet before getting into bed but never really expect to find anything (although always secretly hope David Beckham may be there). A few months ago I was gaily wafting a pillow when staring back at me from beneath was a huge spider. I couldn't sleep for days!

Piffleoffagus · 07/08/2004 20:22

they get into your house up the drainpipes dh says, and come in search of water..
once in my old house I had the daddy spider, then the mummy spider the next night and then 3 little ones.
I actually nearly felt guilty about sending them out in the trash... I now just my dh or my cat on them!

ITS ONLY A SPIDER!!!
and at least you aren't in Australia.

I like house spiders. They eat all the flies and DD is fascinated by them.

We have a huge one called Albert who lives behind the telly.

Ghosty · 08/08/2004 07:31

Another Arachophobe here ...
Hate them, hate them, hate them ...
I even am avoiding visiting friends in Australia because I am terrified of meeting one of their nasty ones ...
One of the reasons I was happy to move to NZ was because DH promised me that there are no nasty spiders here ... but he LIED!!!
We have things called White Tails in our house that live in pairs and hunt at night ... they are just horrible and hide in clean washing ...
I have been known to hyperventilate from being scared by a spider, I have been trapped in a room a couple of times before, once when a spider was on the wall by the door and once when a spider was on the floor in the hallway. I can't even get close enough to put a bowl or glass on it
Tammy ... you poor thing! Am glad you have survived the ordeal!!

My BIL and SIL have a spray thing that they brought back from OZ (SIL is an aussie) that seems to just freeze and kill them dead in their tracks!

tammybear · 08/08/2004 11:21

ill have to look into that spray. was terrified last night whilst sitting in the dark watching the ring that there may be another one crawling about.

when i was on holiday in great yarmouth, i was in bed and a spider crawled out of under my pillow next to me. you can imagine i didnt get much sleep that night lol, especially when it disappeared until two nights later when i saw it run under my bed
