What to wear to a black tie dinner

Hi,

I'm going to a black tie dinner in a few weeks and am not sure what to wear. I have some nice knees and above-knee length cocktail dresses. Would that be ok or would a long gown be more appropriate? I love to dress up but don't want to spend a fortune! I also hate not looking the part so want to err on the side of caution.

Suggestions / opinions welcome!

Sounds fun!
I think it depends on the venue and occasion. For example, I went to a 'black tie' event in winter and they had no facilities for black tie attire, e.g no seats so all of our feet were in pain, and no cloak room, so were all left holding out coats or hanging them in an inconvenient place.

That was a rare occasion, and if you're going to a dinner I'm sure it will be some place lovely.

I personally wouldn't go for a long gown and would stick to a below the knee dress with heels. If you were to wear a long gown this is also fine. I wouldn't go higher than knee length. Enjoy!

Need more details chocolatesun! What venue? How formal is the dinner? What kind of occasion is it?

I go to quite a lot of these each year that are connected with my work & some I'd wear long to & for others cocktail is fine.
