I have just done the kids a tuna and brocili bake thingy, with a jar of cheese sauce. As i put the jar in the bin i checked the best before date and it should of been used by the end of june.

What do i do, shall i chuck it all in the bin ?? Its in the oven cooking as i speak.
It smelt alright when i opened the jar and it looked yellowy white which is how i would expect cheese sauce to look so, is it o.k or will i make the kids ill ??

nutcracker · 04/08/2004 16:45

Do you think. I mean if it were fish or meat or something then i would chuck it, but cheese should be o.k shouldn't it.

I am well known for cooking things therough well anyway

Hi Nutty - was it a best before date or a use by date?

lonelymumof3 · 04/08/2004 16:46

lol nutty.....me too!!! i would think it would stil be ok. Did it say best before of use by?

lonelymumof3 · 04/08/2004 16:47

if its best before then all it means is it might not taste the same but wont matter if you eat it past that date. Use by is different...you have to use it by that date

Lonelymum · 04/08/2004 16:47

I think these jars always have a period of time when they are technically out of date but still safe to eat. The manufacturers are covering themselves I think. Having said that, I would taste it first before giving it to the kids to eat. I often eat things past their date which taste fine and have no ill effects.

Hang on i'll go see if it was bb or ub

lonelymumof3 · 04/08/2004 16:57

will be fine then....dont worry

nutcracker · 04/08/2004 16:59

Thankgod for that, went out especially to get the tuna so didn't want to waste it.

Who wants to bet that they'll all hate it now anyway ???

Try not to convince yourself when tasting it that there's anything wrong with it. I've done that a lot when I've been a bit unsure of food.

nutcracker · 04/08/2004 17:04

I'll get dp to taste it
