Hi I’m sorry if this is long but I hope some1 can give me some advice or even some hope.
I got a private rented place with my then partner at the time, 3 months later he left out of the blue when I was at work so since then I have been really struggling to pay the rent, bills etc myself, even with some help from the council.
Anyways I just got a phone call yesterday from the letting agency saying the landlord of the property I am in is selling the house so I have 2 months notice then need to leave. I have contacted the council and they said to bring in my notice to quit letter with me when I have an appointment with them in 2 weeks.
I am aware I will probably go into temp accommodation for the time being until a council house becomes available but I worry they will put me somewhere far away from my sons school? He’s 6 and in primary school, 2 min walk away from where I’m currently living. I don’t drive either so couldn’t drive to and from school and to work everyday. I am so anxious thinking they will make me move him schools? He’s only just got settled into school, he’s a very anxious, quiet wee boy and the thought of having to move him is so worrying for me. I suffer from anxiety and depression and have done for 11 years which the council are aware of.
Has anybody been in a similar situation if they had kids at a particular school and if they managed to stay in the same area or if they had to move further out and move their kids schools?
Any advice would be really appreciated x

Please try and get in touch with your local councillor. They should be able to help you.

It depends where your councils temp accomoadation is. In my area the most local temp accommodation is 30-60 mins away from me so yes it's likely you may need to change his school.

Is there anyway you can sort some more private rented? Maybe something a bit cheaper?

Contact CAB too, make sure you are getting the right benefits.

Get outside and check every street in the area for letting agents 'for rent' signs. Walk up and down every street and note down address details and the letting agent.

Check empty houses with 'for sale' signs - the owners may be prepared to rent until the house is sold.

This is what I did in the past. I found several properties that although weren't perfect - were in the right location. I ended up paying more rent than usual but I was able to find a better property eventually.

The problem is I'm not in a financial position to continue to do private lets. My current is 625 a month, in my area and surrounding area, minimum for a 2 bedroom is 625 a month. I just can't afford it Sad Thank you for all your replies and taking the time to read what I wrote x

Getting a one bedroom flat and using a bed settee? My friend did this in an expensive area rather than move away after her partner left her.

Yeah that's an option, would just need to hope 1 becomes available before the 2 months is up in the area as currently there's none going for rent

I would speak to social services. I got housed in really bad temporary accommodation and the council refused to help with anything else, so social services have put me and my children somewhere better. Also, don't leave it until the last minute/bury your head in the sand, be upfront with the council etc.

investigate one beds as well, there are worse things than sleeping on a sofa bed (temp accommodation for instance).

Council and social housing is not much cheaper though. Will you not be eligible for some housing benefit?

Weelis02 · 24/03/2018 14:57

Council housing is a lot cheaper up here in Scotland. I am entitled to it yes it's still not enough to cover 625 pound a month whilst working

What do other people do in your area? Surely not everybody is in council property?
