The title more or less says it all. DH had his bike stolen, he reported it to the Police, they gave him a crime number, we never expected to see the bike again so claimed on the insurance and has a nice new bike. The Police have called tonight to say they think they have found his bike, they need him to identify it but if it is his the question we have is where do we stand with the insurance? DH likes his new bike better and wants to keep it, he has also used it so it is no longer in new condition, will they want it back? Does he get to keep both bikes?

Inform the insurance company and take it from there...
I do not imagine any thing coming from it though, it would not be worth their time to pursue it and whatever...

Pre mn I worked in motor insurance. Yeah definately the old bike is now the property of the insurer who will sell it as salvage. If you wanted to keep it they would probably quote you a price.

Used to be a loss adjuster. Tell them, it is theirs but tbh I very much doubt they would actually do anything as it's not worth their time.

Thanks very much for all that helpful info. It's losing the new bike he is concerned about (plus he paid a bit extra for an upgrade, disc brakes that his old one didn't have, so were concerned about that too). If the insurance company wants the old bike then fine, if not we will just pass it one to someone who needs it or put it in a charity shop. We will let the insurance know though.

Thanks for all your help!

Advice still the same but I thought it was a motorbike for some reason. If it's just a pedal bike then they may not even want it back.
