Spring Bank Holiday 28 May - everywhere in the UK EXCEPT EDINBURGH???

Can anyone confirm/explain this to me? I am in London and am perhaps a little dim, but why would Edinburgh alone not have this holiday? Are there other places in the UK where this public holiday is not observed? And how far does "Edinburgh" extend? Where does Linlithgow fall? Someone enlighten me?!!

It is one of Scotland's bank holidays

ShrinkingViolet · 02/05/2007 08:55

bank holidays in Scotland are different to the English ones - and usually it's only banks who have them! Each area has it's own local holidays, so one town will have one Monday and the next town 10 miles away would probabaly have a different Monday. Check the local council websites for the particular area for local holidays.

Well my SIL says Edinburgh is not on holidays on 28 May (throwing spanner in works for proposed family meet up) even though the websites for Scotland (as Seb1 says)and all my diaries/calendars say it is a UK wide holiday. But then the Edinburgh sites say they have 21 May instead. Its not that I doubt SIL - I just couldn't believe it? Someone with local knowledge must know? Main query is whether Linlithgow also falls under Edinburgh - as the other set of family are there. Will be a complete disaster if none of them are on holidays on that day!

Using the sheriff court list here of when they are closed on public holidays (bank holidays are not autmoatically publiuc/local holidays in Scoltand), it would suggest that there is not a holiday on 28 may in Linlithgow. They seem to have a holiday instead in June.

Is Linlithgow not Lanarkshire?

ceolas · 02/05/2007 09:28

No, I'm thinking of Lesmahagow!

WendyWeber · 02/05/2007 09:30

There is a different day in Edinburgh alone - someone on the phone at work (booking holiday cottages told me last week. But I forget when it is so not much help!

WendyWeber · 02/05/2007 09:32

Just googled, it is the 21st - Victoria Day apparently?

From E'burgh.gov

WendyWeber · 02/05/2007 09:34

They also get what looks like a completely random Monday in April - I wonder how they arrive at that date?

And no Aug Bank Hol but a day in Sept instead.

Linlithgow was on that courts list too, jan, and it doesn't get the 21st or the 28th - it gets 19th June & 2nd July.

Weird.

janinlondon · 02/05/2007 09:38

Aaarggh. Every list I look at says something different!!

Okay - I'm surmising Edinburgh is on holiday 21 May, not 28 May, and Linlithgow is on holiday 28 May not 21 May. Thanks for all the input. Still don't know quite why its different!

Going by the courts list it doesn't have the 28th either - mellowma, can you ring your MIL again

prettybird · 02/05/2007 10:54

I don't think you can surmise that Janinlondon. Acording to that lsit, Linlithgoe gets neither the 21st nor the 28th.

There is a tradition in Scoltand of local holidays - for example, Glasgow gets "Fair Monday" (middle of July - this yeat 16 July) and the September Weeknd (end of September), instead of the August and Good Friday Bank Holidays (roughly). Local holidays do not equate to Bank Holidays.
