Aaagh ...since new baby my cat is spraying and ******* all over house

My cat is not amused by the arrival of DS3 and has started to spray around the house. I thought I had managed this by locking him in the kitchen, but I was wrong. I have just been down to the conservatory (where I have a sofa and I sometimes breastfeed) to find he had crapped and sprayed all over it (and my special breastfeeding cushion).

My DS3 is only 2 weeks old. Is the cat likely to get used to him or not? Any ideas? It is driving me potty, because my house now stinks but I daren't open the back door because my cat will come back inside again. Also is toxoplasmosis an issue? (The cat only arrived when my elder two were 2+ so I have not had to deal with this before).

Why oh why does this have to happen when my tumble drier has just broken! I already have a load of cushions at the dry cleaners due to this problem.

HELP!!!

Cat feels usurped & is trying to dominate the situation by marking his territory. The only thing I can suggest is the Felispray hormone plug in - may or may not work for the spraying, but not for the crapping. You may have to re-home him if it dosn't settle down....sorry! It is not something you really wan tto have to deal with, with a new baby - either way...

How old is your cat? Is it a boy? i take it it is. Have you castrated him yet? He is trying to establish his terretory again as the new baby is a threat> If you have not castrated him then get him done. You need to act quickly before this becomes a habit. One of the things you can do to prevent him spraying where he has been doing so is to clean the area with BIOLOGICAL washing up liquid and dabbing the area with meths when it is dry, this will destroy any residual smell which is attracting him back to that spot. You could try getting some pussy pheremones from the vet as this may make him feel less unsettled, just spray it around where he usually sleeps, takes a while to kick in but it works well, talk to your vet about it, it is often used for this problem.
It is called Feleway and costs about a tenner.

There is an outside chance that puss has developed a cystitis, maybe because he hasnt ventured so far due to the new baby so might be worth getting this checked too. I doubt it though as does sound more like a reaction to new baby.

Good luck

bootsmonkey, great minds! feliway is the spray version of the plug in. No need to rehome just yet, give these ideas a try. Of course i appreciate you have enough on your plate but the older children may well miss puss.

My mistake - he is castrated so not spraying but urinating. It is definitely due to the baby, because he sniffs eg mat where baby has been lying and then urinates there.

Is the cat weeing or spraying? I only ask because having him neutered is the obvious one to stop the latter.

However, if he's weeing and crapping, our female started doing that in our hallway when dd arrived and I'm afraid we have been very mean and shut her out, only letting her in when it's dinner time and DD has gone to bed. We throw her out again before we go to bed and lock the catflap.

The smell of cat pee is almost impossible to get out of things - I'm quite a calm person (people who have read my AIBU threads will be sniggering at that!) but the stench and the muck (and the thought of dd inadvertantly touching it!) make me sooo angry I want to kick the cat out and never let it back again. Or not take her with us when we move.

Then I realise I'm not quite that evil and the cat is 15, she has been here a lot longer than dd and her nose is obv. out of joint - still makes me mad though, you have my every sympathy!
