Hello all.....not sure if I am in the right subject, it didn't seem to fit in anywhere else.

Anyway, does anyone know what age a child should be able to recognise colours??? I cannot find this out anywhere. My dd has just turned two and cannot seem to recognise colours, even though I have tried to teach her. She knows animals, etc, but not colours??

I am just being silly or should she know colours now?

Can't remember when mine learned but 2 does seem a bit early. I do remember how they learned though, Dh taught them with smarties (I know they make kids hyper), they could only have one if they said what colour it was. Men are soo cruel

my ds2 is just 3 and he has only recently got the hang of colours. Possibly 4-6 months ago - so he woukd have been at least 2 and a half. He couldn't get it at all for ages and then suddenly it just clicked. he's been counting upto 20 though for ages before that. IMO children pick up different things at different ages. So it is so hard to say what is a right age for attaining certain skills.

My ds was 2 at the end of April, and he knows his colours. He learnt at nursery. I was very surprised as he just came out with them one day last month.

my dd was 2 in May and is only just starting to learn colours. She's got the concept - she points at things with lots of different colours on and says "colour". But she hasn't really got the hang of red, blue etc yet.

At nursery they've been learning about red. They'll be doing blue next year!

happy1 · 28/07/2004 15:03

But he's not very good with numbers, he gets the gist of counting, ie pointing at things and counting, but he usually says '7, 8, 7,8,'!! Bless him! I really wouldn't worry 2wildbabies, she will learn when she's ready, like Kayleigh said, children are all different and learn things at different ages

DD was 2 on April 5th. She knew the names of her colours before then, but it has only been in the past 3 months since her birthday that she has used them to name colours correctly and consistently.

Northerner · 28/07/2004 15:13

My ds was 2 on 5th April and he knows red and blue but that's about it. Everything is blue or red at the moment!

Tetley · 28/07/2004 15:15

I wouldn't worry about it - kids pick up different things at different ages.
My ds1 is 3 1/2 and has finally just stopped getting blue & red mixed up! We'd started to think that he might be colour-blind, but it was just one of those things that got sorted out eventually. I certainly don't think he knew his colours when he was 2.

jampot · 28/07/2004 15:16

Seriously can't remember how old dd was but probably quite early as the first colour she could say was "purple" (!) and she spoke well very early on.

jampot · 28/07/2004 15:17

I think ds was about 3 though which seems a bit more normal

Fio2 · 28/07/2004 15:18

I think Northerner is right, they do know colours but not know what they are. My son gets very mixed up (he's 2 1/2) but knows certain ones okay. i think he just guess's most the time

Hulababy · 28/07/2004 15:20

At 2y 3m DD knows accurately: red, yellow, green, blue, pink, black, white, purple. But she isn't even vaguely aware of colours such as brown and grey for example. They are given any randon colour's name still. I think it properly clicked for her about a month ago.

Fio2 · 28/07/2004 15:21

my son knows silver, i blame it on his car obsession!

2wildbabies · 28/07/2004 15:24

that's good. I have been trying for ages to get her to know colours...at least I know it is just me panicking over nothing.

Thanks for your advice. I'll lay off her a bit now. She will pick things up when she's ready.

DS2 knew most them at 2 - nursery taught him, but his counting is still erratic and he's nearly 3 (nursery teaching him again).

DS1 however could identify not only the colour but the makes of cars by their badges at 2 (eg ford, audi, mercedes), but ds2 (at nearly 3) just about knows that mummy drives a VW and isn't sure what daddy drives.....

guess which boy is car mad
