Frustrated lyricist needs music for her words! How do I find a band?

Have written bits and pieces of poetry for years. I have come to realise that in my head I imagine the words being sung not spoken. Dur. So it's not poetry they're lyrics!
I'm not musically talented, I don't play instruments and although I can hold a tune I haven't got a fantastic singing voice.
So how do I go about finding a band who might have the music and a singer but no words?
Thinking along the lines of a Bernie/Elton arrangement, whereby someone sends me music and I come up with some words for it

If you are not musical and don't sing would it not be better to do it the other way around as then the musician takes the responsibility for the stress being on the important beat of the bar.

it doesn't work like that. you write the music and lyrics (on your own or with someone) and give it to bands to play for you.

You could advertise in the stage for someone to write with or in your local paper for any bands needing lyrics and see what they come up with music wise

Actually Elton & Bernie have a pretty rare arrangement where Bernie faxes lyrics and Elton puts them to music.

Have a look on your local Gumtree for jamming bands etc although I suspect you'd need to weedle your way in as a singer. Have a look here for a bit more confidence.
Also, try reciting them in a rhythmic way (not Vanilla Ice style obviously )open mic nights to experiment, make new contacts and gauge audience reaction.

it's possible to write music to lyrics, the problem arises when the lyricist and the musician don't necessarily have the same idea re the music iyswim.

You could send me your lyrics and I could put them to music, but you would need to have an idea of what kind of music you wanted, because the kind of music could make for a totally different song.

i.e. you could write the same lyrics as a balad or a rap and the effect would be totally different. so you need to have an idea, would be happy to try though if you were interested.

Bucketsofdynomite · 16/04/2007 21:22

Johnny Marr used to come up with the music, record a backing track with the band and Morrissey would write the lyrics and melody. Plenty of people can't stand the sound of his voice LOL! (vile ignorant peasants they are though)

I don't even know if my words are any good. When I look at them on paper they seem so self-conscious but because I've been too chicken I've never got any feedback for fear that they're terrible. (but on the other hand I am so fuelled by ego that I think that if I post them here to get opinions on then someone will pinch them )
