If my MIl needed residential or nursing home care after my FIL passed away how would she be expected to pay for it? She lives in Spain so would be she eligible for a place in the UK? Most of their assets are in Spain too

Jampot, I have no idea of the answer to the question but just wanted to say that you are very sensible finding out now. My PIL are in Spain, FIL is 5 years older than MIL and had a triple bypass 3 years ago, they always expected him to be the one to go first. MIL was diagnosed with cancer just over a year ago and DH has jumped on planes 3 times now to say his final goodbyes, miraculously she is still with us.

It appears that there is some sort of social services type care over there and someone from the British Embassy arranged for a home assessment. He started mentioning about them both going into a home over there, so again I think there is stuff available in Spain but no idea what or how much or what the situation is if they come back into a home.

I really wish all this had been discussed whilst they were healthy, it has been an utter & complete nightmare.
