as modern foreigh language learning has plumetted because it isn't a compulsory subject this would be a bit of blow to the government trying to get more students to university

in my day they used to claim you had to have latin

This is not totally untrue. Universities will look favourably upon those who have studied a GCSE / A level in a Modern Foreign Language. I once had a pupil whose Cambridge entry form was queried as he had not studied a MFL at GCSE. After much discussion he was offered a conditional place. So, your teacher was not totally "plein de merde!"
