There are 5 big birds eggs in an old butler sink by my back door

The sink is full of earth ready for bedding plants. The bird has been in there flicking the soil about. The eggs are BIG nearly as big as hens eggs, completely plain and a beigy/creamy colour.

Any thoughts as to what they are? No sign of Mum at the moment. We live in a farming area.

Well, the mystery is already solved. DH has seen a lady pheasant sitting there. So the next question is when do they sit on their eggs and for how long?

I have put a blanket up inside so she can't see us wandering about indoors as it is quite literally right outside the door.

raspberryberet · 29/03/2007 12:12

According to my bird book pheasant eggs hatch after 23 days, the babies leave the nest at 12 days and stay with their mother for two months.

Lucky you, what a lovely thing to see.

Sounds like a little bit of Easter magic

SecondhandRose · 01/04/2007 08:14

Well she has since been back and now we have 7 eggs. She sat on them for an hour yesterday while she laid some more.

I have made a picturetrail account and taken photos so everyone can see their progress. I am going on hols tomorrow so it will be a while before I update it but it will be ages before they hatch anyway.

Is there an update yet?

SecondhandRose · 22/04/2007 12:16

Just got back from holiday yesterday. I have updated the site with a new photo of our mum to be sitting on 13 eggs!

She has a bowl of water and at the moment has the parasol over her as she is in full sun!

She is sitting most of the day and night now although does get up for a while. Will get a photo of the eggs later if I can.

Please click on the link lower down to see Mrs Pheasant. Does anyone know what they eat? I tried her on some toast but she doesn't like it.

She looks rather comfy despite sitting on 13 eggs! I've been match-making for a peacock and hen today.

NotanOtter · 22/04/2007 23:50

fab

BonnieDarko · 23/04/2007 00:01

Here is what they like to eat.

Doesn't mention toast

I'm going to get her some seed today, she didn't move off the nest all day yesterday, she is working so hard, poor love.

She is drinking out of her water bowl that I've left her, I'm just not looking forward to 13 baby pheasants running round the garden it'll be like Dr Who!
