Toddler, unrestrained on front seat, with one leg stook out of car window - on motorway!!!

This is what my sister saw yesrday on her way home from work!!!

The young child, no more than a toddler, was playing about completely unrestrained on the front seat of the car. And at one point she actually stook her leg out of the open car window!!! My sister was stunned to say the least; couldn't believe what she was actually seeing as the car drove past.

Then today, as I was going to collect DD from school I saw a car drive by me. In the back seat there were either 4 or 5 youngish children (maybe aged 5-7 ish) squished in, and then two toddlers stood on the front seat, with a woman driving!!!

Do people really not care about their children's safety or do they live in cloud cuckoo land and think that it couldn't ever happen to them! Bet they'd be the first to lay the blame elsewhere if an accident did occur too.

Why????

OMG

it drives me sooo mad as well.

So often i see children sitting in their car seats but not strapped in Whats the point of that?

Grrrrrrrrr

I dont understand how nayone can have such a complete disregard for their childrens saftey

edam · 28/03/2007 18:45

Wow Hula, that is extreme. Tempting to think it's natural selection at work... (not seriously)

kimiTheEasterBunny · 28/03/2007 18:46

Pulled up behind a car that had a baby asleep on the parcel shelf a while ago, I thought t was a doll at first till it moved.

dustystar · 28/03/2007 18:48

It drives me mad when people do this sort of thing. It doesn't take much to make sure they are safe really does it.

Hulababy · 28/03/2007 19:35

You wouldn't think so would you dustystar. Obviously keeping their (and presumably other people's children in case I saw today) children safe isn't high on their priorities

Sadly, people like this will only learn the lesson when it's too late.

twentypence · 28/03/2007 19:39

I'm wondering if some of these are the very vocal people who don't like the Government getting involved in how they parent?

lizziemun · 28/03/2007 19:57

Hulababy, funny you should start this thread i was walking dd home from nursery yesterday, and 3 cars passed me as i waited to cross the road all had more children then seats and none of them strapped in.

When i used to wait for dh at the local train station, everyday a women would get into a car and take the baby out of the seat the dad had put her in and sit in the front seat. They would drive with no one wearing any seat belts.

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 28/03/2007 20:00

It's not just the safety issue though

It's the only time I can strap DS1 down! The thpught of him piss arsing about in the back when I'm driving just makes me get the red mist

chirpygirl · 28/03/2007 20:08

This reminds me of the time I was riding pillion on the back of DH's bike and we went past a car with 2 adults in the front, driver on teh phone, passenger with a baby (about 6-7 months) on her lap, and another adult in the back with 3 toddlers climbing all over her.

I tapped him on the shoulder to look as we were stuck in queueing traffic and we both shook our heads (as we couldn't hear each other), the driver saw and rolled down his window to scream abuse at us and then screamed off round the corner so quickly all the toddlers fell over.

Unbelievable

BigCremeEggs · 28/03/2007 20:11

truely thick people they are...they just dont care!!

chirpygirl · 28/03/2007 20:13

Naturally the father had no shirt on and all teh adults were wearing plenty of bling.
Nice to see they can afford jewellery but not something to save their kids lives.

DH was tempted to go after them and give him a 'good talking to' but didn't as it would have put the kids at risk.

I still get cross that I didn't get the licence plate.

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 28/03/2007 20:14

most parenting issues I can say yeah whatever about. Thi is one I get on my high horse for.

ex boyfriend is a paramedic. I rememeber him saying that almost without exception, all the children that he had treated who were either killed or v seriously injured in an rta could have been saved by a car seat.

I dread to think what scenes he used to see

Nikki76 · 28/03/2007 20:16

Oh God...so wish hadn't started to read this thread...off to Syria with DS next week and their mentality over their with car seats is lax to say in the least! Have INSISTED we have a car seat for the journey from the airport to the centre and have been told we have a car seat waiting for us...really really hope its the case!

They drive over there with no seatbelts at all, let alone car seats so its an uphill struggle to get them to take it seriously!!!

IntergalEGGticWalrus · 28/03/2007 20:18

I have taken DS1 in a car without a car seat once, and it's when we had to come back from A&E ne saturday night in Birmingahm after he'd been taken in in an ambulance. I drove at about 4mph all the way home. I was scared shitless that some pissed up nutter was going to crash into us.

I may have been over reacting, but it's one issue I won;t stand down over

Really? I didn't know that re allowance...our car seat is a Britax first class Si....pretty bulky and am worried it may get damaged in transit and not work properly - are there any others you would recommend for taking abroad? We won't have our own car over there by the way, will be in relatives cars most of the time but I don't mind loading the car seat each time as DS's safety is paramount
