Sweetner experts - what do we think of Spenda?

I know the general MN consensus is that aspartame is the devil's work, but I've taken quite a liking for Splenda - which apparently hasn't got aspartame and is made from Sucralose...

Dp isn't sure whether to still be grumpy about how bad it is. Can anyone set her mind at rest so she can still moan every time I make a coffee?

Thanks

It certainly isn't aspartame. I've had ice cream with sucralose in it, it was rank.

Searching for information about it gives you either sites run by splenda etc, sites run by mercola , or a Wiki entry . The wiki seems balanced, it doesn't sound bad.

Still, what's wrong with just using sugar? Or better still, leaving sugar out? (I used to always have two sugars in my coffee, now have it down to one, will go to zero soon ... I only have coffee a few times a week, if that, anyway.)

Thanks NQC - this thread was getting very lonely..!

I know, no sugar would be brilliant but I've got such a sweet tooth and when I'm trying to be good and lose weight, my coffee (with 2 sugars/splendas...) is my only sweet-tasting joy. If I go back to sugar I'll be on the slippery slope back to putting my two stone on.

Doesn't help that I have about 8 coffees a day...

Hmmm, thing is, having splenda still encourages a sweet tooth. You'd be better off going low-gi, including dropping sugar in the coffee. (You do have it black, or with skim milk, right?)

You should try getting your sweet fix from fruit, or dry fruit at a pinch, rather than from sugar in coffee. (Eight cups is rather a lot, but you probably already knew that!)

(I try to do 'unanswered threads' regularly, so threads don't die unanswered ...)

BizzyDint · 25/03/2007 19:32

maybe try some different drinks? get away from the 8 coffees thing altogether.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/03/2007 19:33

Oooh, yes, try herbal tea or something? There are fruity ones ...

Dottydot · 25/03/2007 22:14

Ewww - herbal teas are horrid - designed to make me feel like I'm on a diet!

I'm a coffee addict... I've gone onto skimmed milk and like it - or I have it black, but it has to be sweet!

Should try cutting down on number of coffees though. Will have a go from tomorrow (way too late to worry about today!)

I'd steer well clear of all these weird food substitutes.
Not good for you.

Why not drink less coffee, but ensure it is better quality and have your sugar.

Have you tried Redbush tea? It's all i ever drink now.

fishie · 25/03/2007 22:23

yes a lot of herb tea is vile. but it is easier to substitute one thing for another, so perhaps better to experminent a bit more, there must be a vaguely healthy beverage which suits you.

MrsSpoon · 25/03/2007 22:29

It'll kill you in the end.
