It's an area in the UK - or it was; may have changed names in the last 2 centuries ...

Not quite sure how to spell it either: could have been Watten-on-stone ...

It's here in Hertfordshire. Nice little area I've heard.

ucm · 16/03/2007 16:43

Its Watton on stone in Herts IIRC

Hulababy · 16/03/2007 16:44

Yes, I am going there this evening! Why?

willywonka · 16/03/2007 16:44

It's in Hertfordshire between Hertford & Stevenage. Nice enough place, very small from what I remember.

PersonalClown · 16/03/2007 16:45

Just google map'd it. It's Watton at Stone.

Hulababy · 16/03/2007 16:46

It is indeed Watton at Stone, not on. Not hypthenated either.

Hulababy · 16/03/2007 17:03

Apparantly there was some rumour that it was supposed to have a high number of wife swapping couples there

I think a few celebs might live there too, not related to above rumour I am sure though!

PersonalClown · 16/03/2007 17:05

And you know this how exactly Hula?

Whoooosh · 16/03/2007 17:08

No! The wife swappers live in Tewin-another village not to far from there.

Has a great Pub there though if you are not looking for the swappers

PersonalClown · 16/03/2007 17:10

How do I not know all this and I live in the area?

Hulababy · 16/03/2007 17:12

PersonalClown · 16/03/2007 17:26

Thank you & LOL at some of replies regarding contemporary Watton at Stone (and thanks for the spelling!!).

My knowledge of ancestry abruptly ends at a shoreline (like most Americans - not here). Watton at Stone was where my mother's side is from and they came to the US in mid-1700s, but I never knew where it was. Just occured to me to post it on MN ... so again, thanks!

Good luck with your history searches then

Currently at Watton this morning and it is very nice.

ucm · 18/03/2007 00:00

IIRC, there is a lovely church there that will have some brill parish records.

RustyBear · 18/03/2007 00:12

I was born in Datchworth, the next village to Watton at Stone - I never heard of any wife swapping - my doctor was in Watton, and his daughter was a dancer with The young Generation on the Engelbert Humperdinck Show, but that's about as racy as it gets.

I was also at Stanborough School, but Stanborough Park was thoroughly respectable back then - in fact iirc it was only created about half way through my time there, when they built the new A1.

ucm · 18/03/2007 01:01

Rusty, didn't you write a poem about me once.

Anyway for your information, when I studied databases at school they used Datchet as a guinea pig (the records were over 100 years old of course)

ucm · 18/03/2007 01:02

Oh fuck huge mistake, Sorry it was Datchworth.

UCM crawls off under a stone. I have pissed everyone off today. Might as well disappear.
