What can I do? It's hard to get a grip on it as it's red hot, so to speak! lol
Ive just run a bowlful to wash up and it wont turn off. It's not blasting out but running enough to cost me a lot of money. I know I will need a plumber but...arrgghh!
Should I try and catch it all in a bucket?

stopcock? that will at least stop the water coming out.

Look under the sink and see if there is a little screw thing on the spur for the hot tap (think dh calls them conductors??). If there is you can use a screwdriver to turn it and it will cut off the water to that tap only.

LotF - you are impressing me with your grasp of technical language

Isn't it normally washers that wear out?

Glad you have been saved by the mallet!
