The Ugly Face Of Racism.

Well. This is how the story goes.

About 2 weeks ago, an environmental health officer turned up on the doorstep of the house where some of our staff live. Three of them are Indian and one English. They had received a 'complaint' that there were loads of people living in the house, and that they were all foreign and 'undesirable'. There are 4 people living in the four-bedroomed house and, on seeing that there was no problem, the officer went away, satisfied that conditions were good and the home sanitary and well-kept.

On Sunday morning at about 4am, DH's boss got an anonymous call threatening him. An 'I know where you live. I'm going to cut you and all your family. You've got the Taliban working for you, over here to blow up our buses' etc etc. Now, he's a big bloke and well able to handle himself, but did the right thing and called the police as it was obviously racially motivated.

Last night at 10.40pm, DH got a call from one of the Indian staff to say there was a problem with someone outside the house. DH leapt into action and got straight round there with his boss whilst I called the police who were already aware of the situation. By the time he got there, the front window had a brick through it, and (luckily) one of the bedrooms had had a brick thrown at the window, but it had hit the frame and not the glass.

I am just so shocked at this. These men are so polite and friendly. They work hard and are already enduring the fact that they have had to leave their wives and families in India just to earn a decent living. They could not offend anyone if they tried, and it makes me very depressed to think that there are knuckle-draggers out there, not just ready to pounce on them for their race, but actively planning to do so. Instead of plotting against them, they should be looking up to them as to what a decent, honest and hard-working person looks like. Makes me really . Just had to rant, really.

Is there ever anything but an ugly face to racism?

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 19/02/2007 12:29

I have been really sickened by the whole thing, actually.

That's HORRIFIC.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 19/02/2007 12:31

How horrible.

funkimummy · 19/02/2007 12:38

I blame the media! If it weren't for them spouting that 40% of muslims want sharia law etc, then perhaps the knuckle-draggers (or at least the ones that can read) might think twice. Then again, maybe they wouldn't.

It happens everywhere. I used to work at a hospital years ago with a consultant whom I'm still in touch with. He got pulled over by the police the other day for a crack in one of his brakelights. They took him into the police station and made him line up with criminals to have his finger prints taken and to take a statement from him.

At this conjecture, let me say he is probably the most inoffensive man you're likely to meet.

Racism on a government scale methinks.

Twinkie1 · 19/02/2007 12:39

COuld you report this to the local paper aybe get them to do an article saying this is happening to harmless lovely people - maybe would shame the said knuckledraggers and make them see that they are being complete pricks???

CorrieDale · 19/02/2007 12:44

Not sure it would work - don't you find that racists always think that everybody else agrees with them and that they're being completely reasonable and rational? No doubt knuckledraggers think that they're some kind of vigilantes, out to save us pinko commie lefties from ourselves.

softmusk · 19/02/2007 13:06

i completly argee with funkimummy the media are a big problem if they are not trying to scare us bout one thing or another they are trying to get us to hate one another and some very dim people believe every word they read in them

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 19/02/2007 13:09

I think there are far too many people ready to believe anything they read in the papers. And all the scaremongering going on at the moment will only increase tensions, real or imagined. Newspapers have alot to answer for.

How very very horrible.

I do blame the media for a lot of things...but the media (in question) merely pander to the small mean-minded readers whose cash they want. In the end, I blame the person throwing the brick when a brick gets thrown.

Blu · 19/02/2007 13:12

GrumpyOldHorsewoman - are you always called that or is this a new name?

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 19/02/2007 13:13

That's true. People will always believe what they want to believe, regardless of any evidence to the contrary.

Blu, have been GOH since I was HoHoHorsewoman at christmas (and HeadlessHorsewoman at Halloween!) Had another, forgettable name before that which I kept for far too long.
