Don't have a VW but do have an ex post office van that dh has converted - this week he has been building a cot to go in it - before i was pregnant we used it loads and it was fab - now we are planning our March trip away in it and I am sure it will be just as fab.

Much cheaper than B and B plus you know what type of bed you are getting! And we can afford to go away more often than if we b and b'd.

my (childless) dsis and bil have one and they love it. Cost about £3-4k, 4 years ago. They spend about £500 p/a keeping it roadworthy, taxed etc and have umpteen weekends away in it. Would be great with one child, might struggle with more than that unless you get top box fitted.

If you are a camping type, would be ace.

We haven't got a VW - they are wonderful but they are really expensive! What we have got is a Mazda Bongo. It's a Japanese import van with a lifting tent roof. You can get them as conversions, but we have an unconverted one so we have an eight seat "bus" for every day, then we chuch some camping stuff in the back and we've got a camper van for the weekends. We LOVE it - it's easy to drive and park, not as cute as a VW but cheaper and more practical. Go for it, you won't regret it!

  • we want one too, Twiglett - my parents had one when I was a kid - made holidays with 4 kids affordable. I LOVED it...don't remember any problems, but I wasn't sorting the food etc!
FrannyandZooey · 18/02/2007 08:59

We used to have one, Twig....unless you can get a new one (they were making them again a few years ago) or have car mechanic skills I would not get one. We loved ours but my god it broke down a lot - which is fine when you are single and don't mind having jolly adventures all the time, but rather wearing when you are sitting outside Ikea with a miserable baby...

we have a Hyundai now, never broken down ever

If I could afford it I'd get an Airstream

WideWebWitch · 18/02/2007 09:05

God, am drooling over those, I could so do camping in one of them (and I'm not the camping type really, prefer 5* hotels!)

sixlostmonkeys · 18/02/2007 09:09

They are so cool!
As has been already said, the older ones need a lot of work (and money) and the new ones are very expensive.
I dream of a camper van
My mechanic has advised me to look for a renault or peugeot camper as he says they are less prone to rusting underneath - this apparently being more expensivce to put right than anything that could go wrong with the engine.
In the meantime my ds buys me second hand little camper vans (and VW beetles)from charity shops and boot sales and I have them lined up on top of the fridge

I dream of getting one round now EVERY year, and have never done it.

Maybe just maybe this year. We are going to move house and if we have room to keep one and any money spare (not likely) we'll go for it.

aDad · 18/02/2007 09:44

quite a few MNers do have them - quadrophenia, and FMV I seem to remember.

katelyle · 18/02/2007 10:10

Don't forget the Bongo!!!!!

nikkie · 18/02/2007 16:47
