I had a pack of something (can't recall what - cornflour?) dated 1996, which was before a house move so I must have actually moved with it out of date!

My friend's MIL died a while ago and they had to sort out her old farmhouse. They discovered a car in an underground storage area. When they opened the car boot there were dozens of tins of preserved whole chickens, labelled in in pre-decimal prices.

This was not in my house. It was in my mum's and I had a clear out because she hadn't. It was bicarb of soda and it cost 21/2D!!! Beat that!

yeahinaminute · 13/02/2007 15:38

Cleared out a cupboard at mums and found a pack of doilies - paper lacy sort - they crumbled on opening and the sticker said 2/- !! - she can't remember why she had them either !!

Suedonim - that's outrageous !!

My granny used to buy cases of things like that and Ye Olde Ham stuff in tins - war mentality !!

Iklboo · 13/02/2007 15:46

MIL had an open jar of seafood sauce in her fridge dated 1999. We threw it out when she was on holiday. She thought it would be OK!!!

suedonim · 13/02/2007 15:59

They opened a tin and it smelt okay but no one was brave enough to try it. What with Bird Flu etc nowadays you could probably flog it for a fortune on Ebay.

Katy44 · 13/02/2007 15:59

Iklboo
I recently chucked out pizza bases use by 2001. But doesn't really compete!
Tutter, I recently threw some flour out only a couple of months out of date. It had little black things crawling in it! I dread to think of the size of the creatures in yours

Frizbe · 13/02/2007 16:03

my gran, aged 93 still has stuff from the 2nd WW in her cupboard, I kid you not, has 2 tins of ration ham..... will not part with it, I will give to local museam when she dies.

MrsWobble · 13/02/2007 16:06

my mum has marmalade dating back to 1982 - she found it when her kitchen was replaced and she had to empty the cupboards.

When FILs dad died, he kept the last sausages he brought round... until we had to clear them out when FIL died- 6 years later! My mum has had some packet of something or another (can't remember what) that we found when we moved house, I remember it was something silly like 10 years out of date.

milge · 13/02/2007 20:23

My friend was coming to dinner and I asked her to bring a jar of redcurrant jelly to save me going to the supermarket just for one thing I had forgotten. She went and got one from her mums cupboard - this was in 2006 and the best before date was 1993! It went down the waste disposal.
