I am a light sleeper and also sleep with the windows open, anyhoooo was fast asleep when I was woken by the sound of bottles smashing, I look out and see a refuse truck, and think 'oh the bottle collectors have finally turned up (we haven't had our recycling collected for weeks, was supposed to come on thursday) anyway as I watch, I see the men just tip newspapers and bottles into the back, and when it drove past I saw it also had normal rubbish in the back too so I guess this whole estate's recycling will end up at the landfill!!!

yes they do it round here too. Ring the council and tell them.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2007 08:02

I will, but thecouncil must have oked it, I can't see these men just doing it. Prolly fed up with the complaints that they are getting from this estate, oh how I wish I had my camera phone upstair with me when I saw that. Bloodly disguting, I spend ages sorting out my recycling and then they just throw it in a refuse truck

Don't be so sure about the council OKing it. the Binmen probably wanted to finish early today.

colditz · 03/02/2007 08:13

Do you live on a rough estate, perchance? I think they do it then because there is less recycling going on in the first place, they feel they can get away with saying "Oh there wasn't any"

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2007 08:15

No, not a rough area at all, lots of private very very expensive housing. Lots of recycling boxes were left out on thursday. We have only had our recycling boxes a short time, as the council had forgotten to give this estate any.

We needed some large items of furniture removing (totally falling apart so couldn't even put them on Freecycle). The recycling lorry went past, stopped and collected our newspapers and drove on. About 20 minutes later it came back and our furniture was chucked in the back of the same lorry. Not too sure where that little lot is going to end up.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2007 08:26

Noticed they didn't take the pile of carpets that one of the student house have just dumped on the path, and has been sitting there for weeks

I'd do better than phone the council, i'd phone the local/national paper. Especially with everything in the news over the past couple of days about Global warming and the effects on the environment.

colditz · 03/02/2007 10:54

iT'S SO BLOODY FRUSTRATING ISN'T IT? Opps

When you've spent ages rinsing tins and bottles, only to see it disapear into the back of the bin lorry!

Bucketsofdynomite · 03/02/2007 21:32

Do you have the heating on while the windows are open? I'm confused - are you nuts, it's February!!!

Skribble · 03/02/2007 21:40

If your council has just started issuing bins they perhaps don't have all of the infrastructure in place yet to deal with it all, can be a slow process and hitches arrise during changeover.

Let them know they what you have seen all the same and hope they get their act into gear pronto.

Our neighbouring council has been doing this for a while now but recently had a hitch with the paper collections, due to a problem further up the recycling line, can be frustrating for us when we have spent time sorting etc , but don't give up on the idea, at the end of the idea we are only being asked to put the right thing in the right bucket not exactly hard labour .

SparklyGothKat · 04/02/2007 21:10

lol, I have the window open in the bedroom all year, I have to or my throat gets all tight and yucky.
Anyway the area has had recycling for years, but we only have just got ours because its a new estate.

We to have our windows open at night and yes the heating on- the windows open to let the fresh air in and the heating on seems to take the dampness away from having the heating on. We have very strict recycling lorries round here, they have been known to rip open bags to see what is in side and if they dont like it they refuse it.

Bucketsofdynomite · 05/02/2007 11:28

Sorry Kat, didn't mean to sound so shocked, I was a bit drunk when I posted that!
Do you have fitted carpet in your room? Sounds like dust mite allergy, my dh suffers a bit, we're thinking about pulling up the carpet (because he's lucky if I hoover once a month let alone everyday ).

tenbygirl · 05/02/2007 12:18

I doubt the council will have ok'd it - hubby saw this happen once and rang the council and the council guy was really amd with the binmen.

The recycling bit is smaller and means they have to empty the waggon more - so rather than go to the tip place they dump the recycling stuff in the back.

charliecat · 05/02/2007 12:23

Whenever the recycling bins are full at our local tip the workers always shout, just throw it over the side..landfill.
It really pisses me off.
Really really really.
I also saw a programme where the whole recycling thing was a sham. A tiny amount was recycled. the rest was landfilled. And noone gave a damn, it was just the way it was.
