Which side of the garden's fence do we legally have to maintain?

Fence panels on both sides of our garden have come down in high winds. I remember the estate agent saying that we only had to maintain one side and the neighbours maintain the other, so everyone (-except those at the end of the street) maintains one side. Which one is it? Thanks!

If the posts are on your side it's your fence.

Oati · 29/01/2007 17:56

you need to check your deeds

is it a new house..otherwise the only way to decide is ask the neighbours..there aren't any hard and fast rules

I was always under the impression that if the posts were on your side of the garden it was your responsibility. Could be wrong though!!

Check your land registry documents - we currently have left( whuch faces onto road) and rear but the house we hope to buy is alleged to have all to rear (garden 200ft long ) but none to front.

as I said, you need to check your deeds - see here
