HELP! My dog has just drawn all over my new leather sofa in biro!

Yes that does read correctly and no I'm not barking although I am bouncing around furiously.

We took delivery of a lovely new read leather sofa about a month ago. This morning could hear crunching from the lounge. Assumed 5 month old pup was chewing up a bit of log as usual. Went in to stop him. But no.....

He was sitting on the sofa chewing a biro. Because he had the end in his mouth the nib was pressing onto the leather and it just looks like a child has scribbled all over it. Just tried rubbing with soapy water but no effect. DH is going to go ballistic. What can I do to get it off?

Stain devils biro remover will get rid of the biro, though may also lift some of the colour from the leather. You could always touch it up afterwards.
If not - claim on your household insurance, but best say it was the kids!

Skribble · 09/01/2007 13:28

Babywipes perhaps.

taylormama · 09/01/2007 13:31

paul mitchell freeze and shine spray!!!!!!!!! we have a cream sofa and got biro on it - it works miracles (honestly) - don't know if regular hairspray works as well ... try on an inconspicuous patch first .... spray on and it will dissolve ink instantly and then wipe off

Budababe · 09/01/2007 13:31

My sis reckons babywipes get anything off!

prettymum · 09/01/2007 13:33

perfume does it for us. my paul smith got rid of black biro marks from cream sofas

Heavenis · 09/01/2007 13:34

Have you got one of those hand held steam cleaners that might work.

handlemecarefully · 09/01/2007 13:34

Biro came off mine with leather wipes

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/01/2007 13:37

quite believe it! lol my mates dog chewed a luminous marker open all over their cream carpet. it was the posh type with the ink sloshing around in a clear compartment that you could see.
your dh shouldn't go as mad as mine did when the dogs ripped all the lino up and shredded it in the kitchen....

sorry but pmsl

Piffle · 09/01/2007 13:40

Surely this should be in gifted and talented?
Should we push for a G+T pets section too?

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 09/01/2007 13:41

or arts and crafts

handlemecarefully · 09/01/2007 13:44

If I were you I would be tempted to separate the new leather sofa and the puppy and not allow pup access to that room - he might start chewing the leather next!

JackieNo · 09/01/2007 13:53

Someone on here recommended cuticle cream for biro on leather sofas. It worked, apparently...

ernest · 09/01/2007 13:55

I've used hairspray twice now to get biro off leather. Maybe do a test in unsee-able area first. If ok, spray loads on, leave to soak in and rub like mad. I just used cheap basic hair spray. No posh PM stuff here I'm afraid

otoh you could just wait and see. Also had biro on our leather settee another time, kept meaning to clean it, when eventually got round to it, it had already gone of it's own accord!

We usually leave a kids chair upsidedown on the sofa to stop the dogs getting on it but its impossible to keep them out completely as there are only 2 rooms downstairs - no hallway with rooms off so the door between is left open, otherwise you don't get any heat through and pup can't get out of the cat flap!

Hairspray sounds like a good bet - will see if we've got any and get DH to expereiment tonight. That way I can't be blamed. []

How did you get on?

zookeeper · 11/01/2007 22:22

ally I feel a bit better to hear your tale of woe - I got my dark red leather sofas on Monday of this week and have just discovered a long, deep scratch on the middle cushion of one done by a sharp coloured pencil left lying next to it and rather shame-faced toddler next to that.

Are babywipes a no no then?

fortyplus · 11/01/2007 22:26

My 'favourite' disaster story is my sil - she had a new car and used her glasses case to scrape the ice off it - needed a respray costing £900 and the insurance wouldn't pay! EEK!

allmytimeonmumsnet · 12/01/2007 09:56

Don't have any hairspray - am going to pinch my mums when we go for tea tonight. Will update later. Fingers crossed.

Can't help on the sofa front but I would ring Esther Ranzen straight away. A dog this talented could make you a star!
