I'm trying to find out what happened to an old house

I have searched on the internet to try and find out why a house was knocked down and when if possible. I have the full address and postcode (its in Stoke Newington in Hackney) but still can't find anything about it.
Does anyone have any ideas where I could look?

was it fairly recent? you could try the local authority website here and see if ther are any relevant planning applications?

enter it on upmystreet.com

thanks foxtrot. Not sure when it was but was between 1962 and 1998. I know thats a big difference in time but thats as accurate as I can be!

Can you just go and look?

foxtrot · 03/01/2007 22:34

It's only quite recently that you've needed permission to demolish, but you might find out some history.

I did go and look, the house has definatly gone, nothing is in its place. The houses either side are still standing which I thought was quite strange. That also made me want to find out what happened to it if possible.

bombsite? Some kind of disaster - fire maybe? Is there a local history society, or some kind of local records office, or newspaper archive you could use? Ask the neighbours?

Ring the local paper. It might make a good story for them and they will have issues they can search through to find out.

thanks for the ideas, it gives me some ideas on how to find out. Not sure I would knock on the doors, but I might post a letter with my email address for contact.
