Looks like ds will be having an op on Thursday, I feel sick!

Exp's family have a history of allergy to anaesthetics, we have to assume that ds has got it for now. The operation is minor but the thought of the anaesthetic is making me feel sick with worry.

What sort of op is it?

If there is a known allergy within the family, I'm sure the medics will be monitoring the situation very carefully.

Let me know if you need any help. Am available for babysitting etc.

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 19/12/2006 12:35

Sending best wishes to you Rickman. As frex says, they will be monitoring the situation so carefully and I'm sure he will be just fine. Chin up

3Ddonut · 19/12/2006 12:41

At least it's known there's a suspicion of a reaction, the anathetist will be watching your son VERY closely and will have all the necessary drugs to hand to deal with it (should it occur) Try to speak to the anaethetist beforehand and I'm sure he/she will reassure you.

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 19/12/2006 12:42

Oh no Rickman I'm so sorry to hear that. Hope everything goes well.

(thanks for your xmas card btw!)

RickmanAroundTheXmasTree · 19/12/2006 14:54

He has a pedunculated lipoma, which sounds very grand but is actually a lump of skin near the base of his spine.

I'm trying to reassure myself that at least they will be ready for any problems, plenty of people have to have surgery and probably don't have any idea they could have a problem. Unfortunately, this is how the situation all came to light, exp's sister had a bad reaction during a minor op. It's scary stuff.

Thanks.

Thanks for the offer of babysitting btw FF. I have to be there at 7 am on Thursday morning!! That is going to be hard going for me, I am not a morning person. Not only that I am going to have to sit with exp all day. I haven't started any wrapping yet, I was going to do it tomorrow afternoon, but it seems that won't be happening. I'll be up all night on xmas eve.

Who is having the children for you at that unearthly hour?

RickmanAroundTheXmasTree · 20/12/2006 10:54

My mum is going to have to come and stay over. I can't stop thinking about it, the actual operation doesn't bother me it is just the thought of the anaesthetic. Hopefully I will get the chance to speak to the anaesthetist this afternoon, I'm kind of hoping they might be persuaded to at least try a local, but on the phone yesterday they seemed convinced general would be better.

FestiveFrex · 20/12/2006 10:57

I can understand why they think a general would be better. Children can rarely be trusted to keep still for any length of time, particularly when in an upsetting environment.

Could they opt for sedation, coupled with a local perhaps? Rather than an out-and-out general?

2boysmacca · 20/12/2006 11:19

Just saw your thread, hope you don't mind a stranger responding. I am very bad with anaesthetic, and have epileptic seizures after having a general. When ds had just turned 1 he had to go under and I was terrified. All was OK, they kept an eye on him but I was assured that it wasn't likely that he would react the same as me. The only thing that scared the heck out of me was when they put him under, I wasn't prepared how his eyes would flick and go up into his head, then become so limp. I was terrified. All this is perfectly normal but it's best to know this in advance.

Hope all goes well

Hows little man rickman? Hope you are all ok. I had to go and talk through ds's anaesthetic today and it made me think of you

RickmanAroundTheXmasTree · 22/12/2006 10:59

Hi

Thank you all for thinking of ds. He is absolutely fine. I grilled the anaesthetist when we arrived and he seemed to know what we were talking about, which is always reassuring. I then spoke to his surgeon and she said that the consultant anaesthetist would be carrying out the op and he knew all about it. I got to speak to him when ds went down to theatre and he reassured me that they wouldn't be using any of the drugs that can cause a reaction.

The op took about an hour and 15 minutes after he was back on the ward, he seemed absolutely fine. Honestly, you wouldn't know that he had had anything done. By the time we got to go home, he was starting to annoy me with all his leaping around particularly as I had been awake since 1 am the night before.

Anyway, he is fine and I'm relieved to have it all out of the way before christmas. Thank you.

What does your ds have to have done zephyr?

FestiveFrex · 22/12/2006 11:23

Glad to hear it all went well and that he is leaping around being annoying!

onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 22/12/2006 11:26

Good to hear rickman - and good that's he's recovered so quickly!!

DS has only got to have a tosilectomy and poss adenoids as well. The consultant ran me through the whole "We don't like to do it until they are 3 becuse it makes the anaesthetic a lot safer" and the decided that they will do it within the next month!

Still, has to be done I guess and it's not anything major... still a horrible thought of them having anything done though!!!
