Did anyone see this horrific video???? I am still totally gutted by it. For those who didn;t see, a mother suspected her partner of maltreatment of her baby daughter and set up a video to tape him. The video caught him grabbing the baby by the feet and flinging her around the room against the wall and throwing her back on the sofa - 3 times!!!!
The awful thing is he didn;t get a custodial sentence - he got 2 yrs community service. How did this happen since there was video evidence???????? The news said people get prison for non payment of parking fines, how dd this idiot get away with claiming 'post traumatic stress disorder' for treating a baby like this!!!! I'm disgusted.

OMG. Didn't see this. It sounds horrific. I can't imagine why there was no prison sentence

The reason was that he was a security guard and had suffered post traumatic stress syndrome as a result of 2 armed robberies that had happened whilst he was working. His defence lawyer claimed that he had been 'affected' by these robberies. That's the only reason he escaped jail. Very very poor.

Thanks for doing the link hulababy. That picture says it all. The baby was clearly very very distressed by what he was doing. We see all the time now people getting away with murder and the like because they had some mental illness. When are people going to take responsibilty for their own actions regardless of mental state, the crime has been committed. I just hope this baby is out of danger now. He must have got pleasure out of hurting her and that's the bottom line.

it was not her partner was it? I thought it was a babysitter?
Either way, he would surely have post traumatic stress disorder if he did that to my bloody kids, I would have skinned him alive.
I am paranoid about who I leave my kids with, no non family members until age 4...
What a pathetic sentence....

Hulababy · 19/05/2004 09:23

Not sure what relationship it was - link doesn;t say.

I still can't get over the pathetic sentence Makes me shudder - that poor baby.

CountessDracula · 19/05/2004 09:29

Yes Piff I thought they said a babysitter too.

Dh and I were also aghast at the pathetic sentence - child abuse is still child abuse even if you have PTSD.

smellymelly · 19/05/2004 09:51

Sick bastard - I hope they lynch him!!!

toddlerbob · 19/05/2004 10:37

If she was that worried why did she put her child at risk to video him? Why not just make sure he was never alone with the child again?

gothicmama · 19/05/2004 10:42

Why would you let someone with Ptsd babysit (babies can be stressful) there must have been some alarm bells ringing it is realy tragic for all concerned. I do not condone any of it

jolou1 · 19/05/2004 10:48

I saw the whole video at work and there was a massive editorial discussion over what could be shown and what couldn't (the mother was determined the video should be made available to the media.) If it's any consolation at all the little girl wasn't actually thrown against the wall and she wasn't physically hurt during the attack. It was horrible to watch though. I can't quite understand how the mum could hover outside the door while all this was going on inside.

secur - I think you are right. I bet she did think that he would be punished only if she could prove it.

bunnyrabbit · 19/05/2004 11:01

So if he's meantally disturbed enough to be violent towards another human being, let alone a baby, shouldn't he be locked up to prevent him hurting anyone else! How can he be let back into the community when he has admitted himself that he is mentally unstable enough to do something as horrific as this. I do hope this doesn't end here.

Good point Bunny rabbit. Who is running the judicial system? If I was a judge I would have seen the full extent of the law put to him. The baby had a broken leg the month before, so although no tangible physical dmage this time, there had been in the past. I think there's something deeper with the mother though. She said on the news she knew he would do something and was really hard to leave her but she knew she could get the evidence.
