Are there any out there in MumsNet world? I discovered Lisa and I had this in common some time last week and was wondering whether there were any others.

My books are currently in storage as they used to be in what is now DS's room. They're not leaving the house though (unless there are dire financial problems.....)

OH YES!!!! I was ADDICTED
I went on & on to my parents about wanting to go to boarding school and wanting to speak 4 different languages... blah...blah..

now I realise what a bunch of jumped up sloanes they must have all been

Eleanor M Brent-Dyer wasn't it????

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 21:30

Er Mo, you're talking past tense...
BM and I are still addicts, collectors, in the fan clubs
And what do you mean bunch of jumped up sloanes? They are not, they are wonderful, warm REAL people

Mo2 · 18/05/2004 21:34

OMG sorry! Didn't realise there was still a THING going!!!
How do I join?
Where do I look?
I could be (easily) reconvinced...

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 21:39

Hi Mo, welcome back! There are a couple of fan clubs, try this website
This is FOCS - Friends of the Chalet School, its about £8 a year to be a member, you get 4 newsletters a year, and they are good chunky ones full of chit chat (BM and I have our babies in the last one!!) and Chalet gossip, you can buy the books second hand quite cheaply, plus Ann and Clarissa who run it, have started reprinting the very rare ones
Be warned, you will get hooked again in no time

Benjaminsmummy · 18/05/2004 21:44

And your money will be spent on hardbacks.......which I didn't realise had been abridged until I joined FOCS.

Wonder when the next newsletter will come? I thought it had arrived as a fat envelope arrived today but it was only a thing from DH's old school

Lisa, I see what you mean about the EBDism about your DS's birth. Hope your DH didn't mind too much!

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 21:51

I didn't even notice it myself!!!
Dunno about the magazine, I can't believe its not here - I go back to work in just under 3 weeks, I want to read it before I go back!
I was planning on curling up on a chair in the garden in the sunshine, and losing myself in Chalet school land, just like I did at the start of my maternity leave, just before DS2 arrived (though it was October, so i wasn't in the garden!)
Hurry up with my mag! I am reaching the stage of glaring suspiciously at the postman, quite unable to believe he hasn't got it in his bag

madgirl · 18/05/2004 21:52

i was a mega fan! i wanted to be joey maynard so so much, especially when she married the gorgeous doctor. can't believe there is a fan club!

marialuisa · 18/05/2004 22:01

I used to read the books at school and wonder why their school was so much nicer than mine...

I could easily slip back into reading them.

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 22:15

click on my link ladies, click on my link and welcome back to chalet school world!
Fan Club? Theres at least two of them, with zillions of members around the world, from junior school age to pensioners - and quite a few blokes too! Its brilliant!

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 22:17

I rather wanted to be Joey too - tho not too sure about the 9 children, nor having triplets
Can you imagine giving birth to them three - in the forties at that!? Urgh!

tamum · 18/05/2004 22:23

She had several multiple births as far as I remember, and I think Margot had a few too. Not that I'm a fan or anything....

When I went Interrailing as a student I chose where to go mainly on the basis of Chalet School locations- Innsbruck, Interlaken (didn't let on to my travel companions, obv)

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 22:29

She has a couple of sets of twins
Margot is one of her triplets, and still at school when the series ends, so I don't think she has any multiple births! It's not that kind of a school and Margot isn't that kind of a girl Infact, she is heading to be a nun at the end!
Perhaps you mean Madge, Joey's sister? She has twins, and so does Mollie, their sister in law

tamum · 18/05/2004 22:29

Oh Madge, that's right. Sorry

Lisa78 · 18/05/2004 22:30

Oh, and a couple of companies that do the Austrian Tyrol, do little chalet sites of interest tours - Crystal rings a bell

Tanzie · 18/05/2004 23:41

I have just sent off for a book called "Chalet Girls Grow Up" or something similar from Amazon.

I think my books are in someone's loft in London...

bobs · 18/05/2004 23:52

Don't know about the books (sorry) but I was the real thing - 3 winter in Austria and 1 in Swizerland (also a villa girl in Greece for 3 summers). As for the "sloan" bit - I'm originally from Sheffield, though would have to own up to going to boarding school

misdee · 19/05/2004 07:42

well you girls have got me intruiged. i have just bid on a book on ebay 'head girl of the chalet school' to see what all the fuss is about.

Sonnet · 19/05/2004 09:40

My sister is a mega fan
Did her English degree dissatation on the Chalet Schol Books!.
She is going to a Chalet school "do" at York University in August - any of you going?

susanmt · 19/05/2004 10:03

Me too!
Preferred reading material for years and years and still get them out for a good read if I am feeling down at all!

Benjaminsmummy · 19/05/2004 11:01

I'm going to York in August - it will be on my 5th wedding anniversary! Luckily DH is sympathetic and will be doing something like taking DS round the railway museum.

Tanzie - just warning you about the Chalet Girls grow up - the author definitely has her own ideas about what would happen and I think it could be said that these don't really tie in with what Elinor Brent Dyer would have written. I enjoyed it though.

OP posts:
Fennel · 19/05/2004 11:39

Me too - loved them, I still have a shelf-ful of them. Actually Joey had 11 children by the last book - another set of twins!

I will have to read the "chalet girls grow up" book now.

but would be embarrassed to join the club, even though am already a member of another 20's middle class anachronism club - the Arthur Ransome swallows and amazons society - a friend joined me, I hasten to add, but it has a great magazine.

Lisa78 · 22/05/2004 18:45

Fennel, that club gets mentioned sometimes in the FOCS newsletters - there must be something about Arthur Ransome and EBD that both appeal to people!
I am reading summer term at the chalet school at the moment, definitely not one of her best, but I don't care!
Did you get it misdee? Is it hardback?!

Wonder who your sister is sonnet?! We might "know" her!!!

Benjaminsmummy · 24/05/2004 13:02

just looked on FOCS website and magazine is being sent out! I'd been resorting to reading back issues

Summer Term definitely not the best but still enjoyable.

OP posts:
Benjaminsmummy · 26/05/2004 09:36

Hurray - the magazine has arrived. And on p24 is a slightly more up to date picture of DS.

Lisa78 · 26/05/2004 19:09
