How do your (pre-school) children make friends when you work?

My dp and I share responsibility for our 3 year old daughter's childcare. He looks after her for 3 days a week and I look after her on the other 2.

I've realised that this has all sorts of implications for her forming friendships - She is at pre-school but it is not in our local area. Also it is my dp who take her most of the time and the other mothers don't really chat to him. This means that although she has friends at school, we don't know anyone to invite back.

I do go to a group on a morning on which I don't work, but the children are all of different age groups and most of the parents are sahms. This means that although we know lots of people to chat to in the street, there are only 2 other children (who are in similar positions) who we know well enough to invite round. I know that there are other working mothers in similar circumstances and was wondering how their children ever made any friends pre-school?
