wooblyknicks and spacemonkey - thank you for making me lol. though i'm still confused! when you are typing the word 'link' do you mean link literally or the address of the site? sorry, i am scared of my computer, i managed to lose the hard drive a couple of years ago and i've never fully recovered.

shrub!

you type:

backslash
link (ie the word "link"
opening curly bracket
URL (copy and paste is best way)
backslash
title you want to appear
close curly bracket

wonder if that is right???

Janh · 17/05/2004 20:30

ignore winky!

That was caused by " followed by )

type "link"

spacemonkey · 17/05/2004 20:30

yes, i'll try again ...

  1. type "\link" - yes, literally type the word LINK!

  2. open curly brackets

  3. put the full URL - "http://www.google.com" for instance

  4. type a backslash followed by the link text - "\click here to go to google"

  5. close the curly brackets {}

spacemonkey · 17/05/2004 20:31

GRRR just put a CLOSING bracket! "}"

Janh · 17/05/2004 20:37

sm, it is an oddity of mumsnet (and maybe other sites, who knows, this is the only one I do links on) that if there is something wrong with the link you type in, it removes the opening curly bracket and makes a neat set at the end with the closing curly bracket.

Presumably the system thinks it looks nice and tidy.

damn - you got one of those intrusive www.mumsnet.coms.

That happens sometimes and I don't know why.

Try again but check what appears in the preview box.

Janh · 17/05/2004 20:43

(The www.mumsnet.com doesn't always show up in the preview box though...)

shrub · 17/05/2004 20:44

oh bugger
my link doesn't link, is it because i didn't write http:? whats that all about? and whats an url? can someone tell me what the abbreviations stand for? i'm lost

Your URL should have been www.google.co.uk

What you need to do is call up the website you want (having minimised the mumsnet page first), copy the URL of the page you want out of the white box at the top (this will include the before the www), then recall the mumsnet page and paste the URL into the "add a message" box, and put the \link etc around it.

Easier if someone shows you how!

Janh · 17/05/2004 20:50

Yeah! Well done!!!

shrub · 17/05/2004 20:53

\linkwww.dogster.com/?36414\Please work{}

Paula71 · 20/05/2004 00:06

Nope, am obviously not meant to get this at all.

spacemonkey · 20/05/2004 00:45

paula, the only thing wrong there is that your opening curly bracket is in the wrong place - it should be directly after "\link" and before the URL

charlieplus3 · 06/06/2004 14:03
