Abuse of e-mail addresses

I just picked up an e-mail from a mumsnetter I sold something to a few months ago entitled "please read this". Assuming it was something personal and worried that maybe there was a problem with what I had sold her I opened it to find that it was one of these "make people send money by telling the most horrible graphic stories" round robin type mails. She had obviously been sent this by someone else who said "pass it on". So now my e-mail address has gone to everyone in her address book and will then be included by whoever forwards it to everyone in their address book etc. Am I unreasonable in being absolutely livid about this? If I buy/sell with a mumsnetter as soon as the transaction is complete I delete their details as I have no further legitimate use for them. I am very careful with e-mail security and hate spam. I have e-mailed her to complain as nicely as possible, but don't people ever think!

I'd probably be really upset too

have you heard back from her yet?

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 06/12/2006 21:46

I think that a lot of people use a hotmail address for transactions and initial exchanges on info on Mumsnet and then reveal their real details once they know each other a bit better. Can understand why you're peeved though!

Tell MN HQ- this is totally against their rules

LIZS · 06/12/2006 21:53

Could it be a virus , working through her address book ?

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 21:55

You are right to be upset

I have friends that do this. I have no idea who the other people in the e-mail distribution list are and I don't want them to have my details. I have mentioned to one friend that I delete all non personal e-mails without reading them but I don't think she's got the hint yet. It is annoying.

No, I haven't heard back from her. I hadn't thought of telling MN HQ Pixiefish - thanks for the tip, if I don't get an apology I will. Thanks for all your responses, I thought it must just be me!
