Help! Car keys have been lost outside of the house.

Our nanny was strapping the children into their car seats this morning - had obviously had the keys as she had opened the car, but then noticed that she only had the keys to her own car (which she had popped into on the way to mine to check the parking permit)....she assumed that she had put my car's keys down amongst the car seats and borrowed my spare set to take the kids to school (she was running late already).
When she returned we both searched the car - have taken all car seats out and crawled round everywhere...also checked her car, and all bags and coat pockets.
Have now decided she must have dropped them on our street We have been up and down the road, searching in the leaves and have knocked on doors and asked neighbours but they have totally gone.
So, question 1 - can you change the locks to a car??
and question 2 - if someone steals it in the night is my insurance invalid?
Will ring police station in the morning and see if anyone has handed them in and try to get a crook-lock or similar tomorrow. It's not a fantastic expensive car and I can't imagine anyone really wanting to steal it but can't relax now.

Poor Bluebear, its not much help but I was in a similar situation a few weeks back, I lost the keys to a new car and we were on holiday!

We searched high and low, reported missing at reception...then when we met up with my parents later my mum casually informed me they were in her handbag. I had apparently given them to her the day before when we went swimming!

I know locks can be changed without it affecting the ignition key, are there any identifying keyrings on which might point to them belonging to your car?

I'd certainly contact the insurance company at the earliest oppertunity for advise, you can't be the first this has happened to.

good luck x
