Is my family the only one that tries to 'age' children and gets annoyed when I correct them

DS will be 6 in 3 months time

for the past 2 months my mother has insisted on referring to him as 6 and laughs scathingly at me when I say he's 5 (or 5 and a half .. I can't bring myself to say 5 and 3/4)

DD is 2 and a half .. exactly .. but to my sisters she's almost 3

why do they do that .. and are my family the only ones who do?

DS2 will be 9mo till he's 10mo on 18th of this month. I have said "he's nearly one!" sometimes because I'm shocked how fast the year has gone.

And don't fib, Twiglett, I know you call DD 30mo.

Mell2 · 15/11/2006 14:16

Dd who is just 14 takes great delight in telling me from January "I will be 16 next year"

Your 30mth dd is a baby of course - not nearly 3!

no you're not the only one.my mum's the same.they're always "nearly ....."!she used to do it with me.always remember her taking me to docs.when he asked my age she said."she's nearly 9"."So,she's 8 then!"said the doc!
