Just wondering if anyone on here hasn't got central heating and if so, what have you got.
I have to look at that maisonette on tuesday, which has a gas fire in the living room and thats it.
If i can't get the council to install centrall heating or get a grant, what would be the best way to heat it.

My friend has oil filled heaters in hers, is that the best way to go ??

You should have an immersion heater for hot water. Most are set to heat up o/night on Economy 7,with a boost button in case you need more hot water. If the immersion heater hasn't got a timer for it to come on during the cheap rate, you can buy them really cheaply.

Is electricity cheaper at night for everyone? I thought it was only if you had Economy 7 "installed"?

In Ireland its cheaper at night, I've no idea about here in England though! (Lived back here for over 3 years, you'd have thought I'd know by now!) I was going to suggest parafin heaters, but did a search on msn, and it turns out they're generally for greenhouse use! (Could explain a lot about ex's parents ).

Wow i am not the only one without central heating then!!! We have a gas fire which had died on us and have had it fixed three times. GRRR. So the winter that has just gone we had no heating downstaires at all. We used oil heaters but got into so much debt with the elecy, i want central heating but can't afford to put it in yet, so we re gonna try aande save up for new gas fire. Its hard but just wear lodes of clothes. lol

Before we had central heating installed, we had just the gas fire inthe living room. I had one of those monoxide testerS and it turned black. The council came very quickly and condemmed the fire so we had no heating at all!

we ripped out the central heating in our house before we moved in and installed electric underfloor heating everywhere. Nearly passed out when the first electricity bill arrived after the winter. It looks much better not having ugly radiators on the walls and it's very pleasant to have warm floors, but my goodness the cost.......
Got an immersion heater for warm water.

ah my first flat. when we moved in the heating was dead, which we knew anyway, hence the flat was quite cheap to buy. we survived the 1st 18months with no heating really. we had 2 little fan heaters. we used to heat the living room up, then about 15mins b4 bed put the one in the bedroom on so it was warm when we went to bed. in the mornign again switch on the heater b4 we got out of bed, shuffle thro to the living room, switch that on. once we 'd had showers etc the place was lovely and warm. but then when i fell pregnant with dd1 the in laws gave us a loan to get central heating installed. i think it was fitted about 2 weeks b4 she was born. ovely 5to have instant hot water and heat when needed.
