My DS1 is home on teacher training today. Do teachers really train on these days or is it a bit of a dossy day? I am not critisising teachers.. think do a great job and don't begrudge them if is a dossy day.. just curious to know what you all get up to?

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 15:22

Sounds fab!

The No Bullshit School!

Sign me up!

I am sighing deeply as I have just spent 30 minutes filling in my bits of my performance managment review! Bag of wank that it is!

Sophiev73 · 27/10/2006 15:23

I'm actually too scared to return to my school because of performance management...

And can I just say to all my fellow teachers, and the charmingly supportive cowmad, how much I have enjoyed my half term holiday

southeastastra · 27/10/2006 17:12

i have no idea how teachers manage - i did three days playscheme this week and am knackered how you lot do it everyday! round of applause for all the teachers

3andnomore · 27/10/2006 20:15

Hm, but why can't twachers training days be on already allocated Holidays days?

3andnomore · 27/10/2006 20:16

that was teachers not twachers, lol...

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:19

3andno more because they areeady are!!!!!!!!

When these days were brought in 5 days were taken out of the holidays for training days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The kids ALWAYS had these days off school, the teachers lot 5 days holiday to train in!

So, guess what, we are not prepared to teach those 5 days and lose another 5 days holiday!

What you are asking for already happened!

(this quip so hacks me off!)

southeastastra · 27/10/2006 20:20

it's so bad that it's taken out of your annual leave

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:22

I don't mind. We do need training days, and it is reasonable that they came out of the holiday. What hacks me off is when parents bitch and moan about INSET days, and ask why we can't get trainined in our holidays.

BECAUSE WE ALREADY ARE!!!!!!!!!

3andnomore · 27/10/2006 20:22

sorry, but then why are all those letter to us parents, ooops, sorry anohte teacher training day, why don't they just state it's Holiday now anyway, and out teachers are training...I am really sorry, but in the UK school is not on much is it, unless it's an independent school...every few weeks ther is a week minimum off, sigh!

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:24

well, I just told you , so now you know.

We are there to teach them, not baby sit them

They would have to pay be a shit load more of money to get me to work any more hours than I already do. Having spent the last two hays of my 'holiday' working

3andnomore · 27/10/2006 20:24

BUT US PARENTS AREN@T TOLD THIS< ARE WE!!!!!!!!!!!!

southeastastra · 27/10/2006 20:26

because some parents don't get paid to take time out of their annual leave to cover for inset days

3andnomore · 27/10/2006 20:27

ahem a teacher is on 17 grand a year, that includes all those Holidays, for the time you work, that is not that bad a pay, and I believe 17 grand is the beginners pay...as a nurse it's about the same, and we don't have that much Holiday and ooooops, we can't just take school hols off to look after our own Kids, hence a lot of Nurses rather not work then!
Sorry, I know teachers in general are doing a great job, and no you are not there to babysit, but in the UK parents often are not given much of a choice, if there was the laws would be different!

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:28

It is crap pay when you have a degree and a post graduate qualification, get to deal with shit all day.

If it is so good, join up, it is a right doss.

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:30

3 and no more. The average taecher works around 60 hours a week dyring term time, sometimes it rises up to 70 hours a week.

If you average it out is is the same hours worked by 'orfdinary jobs'

I'm so fucking tired of all this shit, I can hardly type.

It is 8.30 on a friday in half term and I am still fucking working.

Tomorrow I have 45 course work essays to mark.

You have no fucking idea!

nikkie · 27/10/2006 20:30

Glad to hear its not just ours that are crap then
for the last 3 years we have done PECS,team teach, moving and handling ,Makaton and basic ICT.I know team teach needs updating as does moving and handling but the rest I could do before the training why can't we do something more relevant!
(sorry sore point at the moment -we had to list anything we wanted training on and that the next session will be ........................basic ICT!)

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:31

now moveing and handeling would be potentially helpful, but only the special schools get to do that round with us.

3andnomore · 27/10/2006 20:45

Y????are you doing it then if it is soooo crap?????????

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:46

Sorry 3andno more.

I shouldn't have snapped at you, it was rude of me.

I just get well and truely sick of jabs at teachers. The pay isn't that good when you look at the qualification that we have to have. Do you know that we have no legalyy mandadte maximum hours? That we are expected to work as many hours as it takes to do the job to a satisfactory level.

In the UK teachers estimate that they work at least 60 hours a week. Whe I can I arrive in work at 7.30. I am never the first teacher to arrive.

For every 70 minute lesson I teach, I spend at least 30 minute to an hour planning....and I am a very fast planner, I know people who take a lot longer.

And don't even get me started on marking. In total this year I have 82 year 11 course work assignments to mark. I will mark each one twice. I estimate that it takes me at least 30 minutes each script....it has to be fully annotated and a sample sent to the exam board.

I have an excellent reputation in the school I work in, I love my job, but I am sick to death of people telling me how little I work.

Blandmum · 27/10/2006 20:48

Why am I doing it? Because I love my job and I'm good at it. If you look at my annual report, actualy I am graded as 'outstanding' in most aspecst. What I'm shit at is listening to people tell me how little I work when they don't know what the job involves.

I stand by what I say, But i shouldn't have snapped at you
