Help required. My 5 year old DD1 wants to go to a fancy dress party dressed as a train (ideally Thomas): where have I gone wrong? Anyone got any ideas: patterns to help me along

thanks

lol at your name calpol

are you new?

SoupDragon · 22/04/2004 21:04

Tricky one!! Has to involve a cardboard box I would imagine. How long have you got?

Tinker · 22/04/2004 21:04

Cardboard box, cut out armholes, decorate as train, blue face paint??????

marthamoo · 22/04/2004 21:05

Bl**dy hell!

Erm...make him a black tube for his head (funnel) out of cardboard. Blue clothes. Thomas's face on a big circle of cardboard fastened to his front and a Number 1 fastened to his back?

Maybe a couple of wheels made out of paper plates painted black and attatched to the sides of his legs?

Blimey, I don't envy you!

I can hear soupy stops coming out

go crafty soupy

Codswallop · 22/04/2004 21:05

its a dd!

marthamoo · 22/04/2004 21:06

You could still use my funnel hat idea and make him a train box, you can just use the outside square of a box and make kind-of braces to hold it over his shoulders. Do Thomas's face on the front?

marthamoo · 22/04/2004 21:07

OMG - I am so sorry (and sexist) I assumed it would be a DS!!

LHP · 22/04/2004 21:11

I dressed up as Thomas for NYE! I painted Thomas's face on cardboard "bib" front and back, painted my face and hair (sticky uppy) with black face paiont to act as funnel, wore blue trousers and sewed cardboard wheels on the side. The work of an afternoon, max. Fab idea of your DD methinks!!!

Codswallop · 22/04/2004 21:12

martha did you get your t shirt?

littlemissbossy · 22/04/2004 21:13

I'd go with the cardboard box painted and with braces to hold it up over shoulders - i did a "scoop" from bob the builder like this, got the idea out of kids comic and it looked quite good (even if i say so myself) - hope you're the creative type!

Can you make one of these out of cardboard?

Codswallop · 22/04/2004 21:20

said in 5year old fashion

SoupDragon · 22/04/2004 21:22

You'll notice I didn't try to come up with my own version though

calpol · 23/04/2004 13:59

Thanks everyone, I guess this weekend will be spent surrounded by large pieces of cardboard.
LHP, I love the face paint idea. She will be very particular about ensuring she's got a funnel!!
I have no idea what her friends will say when they are all dressed up like fairies. Will anyone talk to her in the school playground the next day??
Thanks

This is a good idea - it is based on a shoe box though so you would have to adapt, unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a picture but the colouring pages would be handy for making face etc. here
