Buying Our First House - Who do we thank with a gift?

Evening All

We're about to complete on our first house this weekend and wonder whether there is an etiquette with thank you's/gifts. Should we send a thank you card to solicitor/estate agent/etc, get a present for vendors? Or should we not do anything for anyone? We're not loaded and indeed we are paying people but just wondered what you all had done in the past...

Do nothing! Agents and solicitors get paid enough anyway. The only thing I ever do is leave perhaps a bottle of wine/flowers for your buyers.

Agree with Merlin - you have already paid your solicitors their professional fee! And the estate agents will ahve made more than enough cash out of the vendors...

I think we're so relieved with the whole process coming to the end and starting out life in our first owned abode, that I'm gushing with thanks but think you are right - maybe our vendor will leave us a nice gift!

anyone who's lent you any deposit money!

everyone else will have done nicely out of it already.

at the very least hope they leave the house clean - nothing worse then having to scrub out kitchen cupboards before you can unpack!

Luckily we've built in a couple of days of painting and cleaning before we move in! Nice vendor but appears to be "offering" us wardrobes etc as he can't bothered to move them!

Bizzarrely our buyer gave us a bottle of wine and a box of chocs. I left them some old 80s cassettes (it was going to be a student house.) Sweet FA to agents and solicitors, they all got more money than they deserved.

CarolinahowlingattheMoon · 18/10/2006 23:23

Just say a nice thank you (over the phone or whatever) to the sols etc.

you're doing plenty for the vendors just by buying their house, believe me

Piffle · 18/10/2006 23:24

I leave a wine a card and some how to notes/house file for your buyers
Sod all for estate agents, sheesh thieves
