we've had a quote in from the people who moved us 5 years ago and it seems reasonable (just over a grand plus packing costs plus vat). would be useful to know what others have paid to save me going to the trouble of getting another firm in for comparison's sake.

it's a 5 bed house and we're in the south east.

Sounds reasonable to me, we were expected to pay 2500 Euro from south to north Germany and that was just to drive the stuff, we had to do all the packing.

TutterIckOrTreat · 18/10/2006 12:40

oh yes, oops, i forgot to say how far we're moving. only 30 miles.

Sounds fair to me for a house of that size - haven't moved for years but lots of friends have in the St Albans/Harpenden/Hemel Hempstead area. Think my bro ended up paying about £3000 but he had to have all his stuff in storage for about 9 months while they had the new house gutted & extension built.

i am getting a luton van and driving it myself - packing my own stuff into boxes i get from work - including insurance it will cost me under £100!!

TutterIckOrTreat · 18/10/2006 12:50

custy, i'll take that as a quote. you free and feeling strong on dec 5th?

dont go too cheap - mum had everything shoved in the wrong rooms & garage (2 years on and its still a muddle), my boyfriend at the time did a 1/3rd of the work, and we've never seen mums camera since...

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 18/10/2006 12:53

That was £750 I think - 4 bedroomed house (minus one bedroom as it was dads and he did his own). Just over 1k for 5 bedrooms sounds good if they are reliable.

northender · 18/10/2006 13:07

I think it cost us £1300 but that was going 300 miles from Plymouth to Preston.

wheelybug · 18/10/2006 13:08

We're moving less than 5 minutes walk around the corner and have had quotes of between £1000 and £1600 including packing... So I would say that sounds reasonable.

foxtrottingtotransylvania · 18/10/2006 13:13

Sounds about right, i'd get three quotes though, just in case.

donnie · 18/10/2006 13:15

if you can get a reputable firm for under £1500 you'll be doing very well!

thanks all. i think we'll just go with them. they have moved us before, and a few friends several times and no problems so far. i did an online quote with pickfords and they estimated £2,200 just for the removal

just cannot bring myself to pack

last time the packers had to come and find me to go though one box which was sneezing (it had a furby in it - thought the batteries were long dead, but no )

I'm with custy as we got quotes for around 1400 and were just going to hire a van and do it ourselves

lol at the furby - you wonder if they thought you had sneaked something living into a box
