I can't believe what has just happened

I am so shocked about this that i just have to "tell" someone. My mum and my sister with her twin 3 year old boys came to visit today and we went into the town. Anyway half way throught the town, twins were getting restless and so were my two children. So we decided to get a ball and go to the mermorial garden just down abit from the town. So the kids were having fun kicking the ball and we were all glad to have a bench to sit on, while the kids played. Anyway there was this group of youths, which i'd say age ranged from 16 up to 20. Well they were fine, just chatting or whatever they do. And the council came to cut the grass so our kids moved and were watching them. All of a sudden this glass bottle( reef bottle or teeny ach bottle) came crashing around all our kids feet. We all just stood there for a min not taking in just what happened. it came about an inch away from my nephews face. My sister and mum shouted at them they didn't apologise or anything. So we went and walked to the police station near by because we didn't know what else to do and thought perhaps the police would mmove them on or whatever. The police said that because it didn't actually hit anyone, they couldn't do anything and just took down a statement for information only. I cannot believe it. How would have you handled it if it happened to you. I not sure what else we could have done. BEcause if we had gone up to them, they probably would have started hurling abuse or even worse threatening to beat us up or something and what with children 5 and under didn't think this was appropriate. Just wondered what people thought about this situation.

I'm really shocked. I live in a fairly rough inner London borough and have never seen or heard of anything like this directed at small children.

I wouldn't have done anything different to what you did - certainly wouldn't have gone up to them to confront them if I had the kids with me. Dunno what else you could have done, tbh.

This is in Ashford in Kent. It was a really nice park place. What annoys me is that they didn't even apologise for what they did. I must admit one of the girls did look shocked and what i forgot to add in my post was there was a young girl with a tiny baby with this gang too. I am just so shocked about this.

God Soulfly, that is really upsetting - did they throw the bottle at the children deliberately? Or did they just chuck it like morons, and it ended up landing near your children and your sisters?
I would be REALLY upset if I were you, idiots

I reckon you did the right thing by reporting it to the police but how shocking that the police wouldn't take any action. Why wait until they physically hurt someone?

Soulfly · 20/04/2004 17:18

I know i was abit sort of frustrated because of the police wouldn't do anything, i thought they might just have quiet word you know? But no. To be honest we don't konw whether they threw it deliberately or whether it was an accident we didn't see them throw it, but there was no one else about with glass bottles. As i saaid in my first post it missed my nephew by inches. I hope the council clear it up.

how upsetting! no wonder you are shocked. i think you did the right thing going to the police.

bossykate · 20/04/2004 17:21

but sorry they didn't do anything - they should have gone and had a word.

Freckle · 20/04/2004 17:24

Are you sure it was the lads, rather than something being flung up by the council's mowers?

Soulfly · 20/04/2004 17:26

no the mowers were at the otherside of the park. It was definately them. BECAUSE SOME OF THEM WERE LAAUGHING!!! BDS

What an awful thing to happen. Can't believe the police wouldn't take it any further than they did.
Were the little ones ok ?

melsy · 21/04/2004 10:56

What is it with some kids, I would have probably barked at them. I wouldnt have been able to control my temper. The police are useless sometimes all beurocracy and no compassion.

Soulfly · 21/04/2004 11:01

All four kids are fine. Thankfully it didn't actually hit anyone. I know the police are busy etc etc. But my friend said if it had been me that had thrown that bottle, i am sure i would be in trouble. if i had thrown it in a crowded public place.

Do you think any of the 16-18 yr olds would be in school or have they all gone back in your area so anyone hanging around must have left? Just thinking if you know which school they might be in could be worth asking headteacher to issue a warning...
Awful thing to happen.
