He was very fond of her although we don't visit that often. I know I need to say something to him before we next go and stay (probably at Christmas) but how do I go about it.

He has no experience as yet of death and i am at a real loss as to the best way to introduce the subject. (He is 4.4 btw)

My MIL's very old dog died recently and my DD (she is 3) used to play with her/lie on her etc etc all the time so the first time we went round and immediately asked where she was. we said she had gone on holiday. She just loked up and wandered off - I thought about trying to say something else but that fitted and she seemed to bounce back straight away.

I feel it's very important to tell him the truth. I'm just not at all sure what questions he's likely to ask - and I want to be prepared iykwim.

Tell him tha cat was very very old, and has died.
And make a nice card to send to his grandm to hel her remember the cat, because once cats have dies, we remember them by sending cards, and we think about the nice times we had cuddling them.
And it will be a bit sad when he goes for Christmas because he won't see the cat, but he and grandma will be able to talk about the cat amnd remember it together.

He may well ask some bizarre and quite gruseome questions. ime 4 year-olds are quite matter of fact or even hard hearted about this stuff. Tell him the body will be buried in the ground.
