Have just seen Channel 4 report on American Evangelicals and now feel it's my social duty to dress my kids up as wizard and witch for Halloween and then for Harry Potter book publishing

Honestly how bonkers are they.

Between them and suicide bombers, what the hell ever happened to the Enlightenment?

Off to start Prisoner of Azkaban now for second time.

I only caught the last bit but something about if all was right with the world Harry Potter would be burned.

Not sure if they meant the book or the character.

Daniel R had better be careful...

wish i'd seen it

I remember reading something about this a couple of years ago, they had protests outside the publishers - scholastic it is in the US and bookshops. According to them Harry Potter is evil.
Personally i think there are far more evil things going on in the world for them to concentrate on

Quadrofiegnia · 01/10/2006 20:23

what scared me the most about this report was the fact that these people make up such a huge part of the American vote, also the fact that the 'leader' of the camp likened themselves to fundamentalist muslims, saying something along the lines of why shouldn't they be fundamentalist as they hold the truth, very scarey

Piffle · 01/10/2006 20:24

Bless them, do they not know he's not real...
And trust me I have the same opinion about God...

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 01/10/2006 20:24

Talking of evil... they had a cardboard cut-out of George Bush which they were encouraging children to come and touch (much like Greek Icons) as he surrounds himself with spiritual people...

Wasn't concentrating properly, but it didn't look good.

And how I wish that GWB was only a fiction

I do know of a colleague who won't allow his children to read Harry Potter because it 'celebrates witchcraft' - he isn't American FWIW!

I'm sure many children have converted from Christianity to Wicca/other pagan worship involving witches/wizards based on their reading of HP. NOT.

southeastastralplain · 01/10/2006 20:32

the whole christianity thing in the US is so weird and extreme.

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 01/10/2006 20:35

LOL at the idea of converting to wicca.

It would be so bloody disappointing wouldn't it?

There I am thinking, I can magically put an extension on my house, memory charms on my boss and never ever do housework again (just wave my wand like Molly Weasley does) and all I find is that I end up in a coven with Ken Barlow telling me I should vote Tory.
