My sister's boy is having his first holy communion in May - can anyone help with what's appropriate to wear? Thanks? And sister said 'What do I wear even?'

Smart but not too smart. Think in terms of a notch or two down from a wedding.

Ditto for kids. Ds (4) wore smart shorts and a cute little button-down blue and white checked shirt for his big sister's Communion last summer.

Depends a bit where you are, though. Here in central London lots of families of Nigerian origin were dressed in fabulous gear, shiny stuff and amazing head-dresses, while other people were very much dressed down.

Personally, I wouldn't really mind what people wore -- the fact that they turn up to show support would matter more to me.

If you meant the Communion boy himself, then the deal is generally a suit and white shirt. The trad thing is a red tie, but in our parish most boys just wore ordinary ties. Or whatever is formal wear for your particular ethnic origin -- a kilt seems to be ok for Scots, for example,

My boys wore black (school) trousers and white shirts with communion medal pinned to breast pocket with white satin bow. Pretty boring but smart enough. the little girl who made her 1st communion with them (v. small community!) had so many frills and furbelows there was nearly a sad accident with a candle.

Thanks for all your help. I think I'll go for low key.

Thank you all - I think that's just what dear sis wanted to hear. DS is up here till saturday 'cos of the Marathon, so loved introduction to Mumsnet. Frogs, where about in central London are you? Mum & sis et al live in the same block, off Oxford Street, near Selfridges. She was soooo impressed by M'net!!! And Maryz, thank you from big sis!
