Off Work with Zippo's Circus Audience Particpation Injury!!

I have done my knee in and can only hobble!

All I can say is that if you go to Zippo's Circus, DO NOT volunteer at the point where they ask for "someone over 18 to sit on a horse". Actually, to be fair, they might have said "someone quite agile and over 18..." and I should have had more sense!

I got to the ringside and a helpful clown briefed me:
"Walk straight over to the Ringmaster - he will introduce you, then run across the ring and jump on to that horse"
The horse was about 15.2 hand high - i.e it's back came up to my nose
"the horse will start moving, then when we say 'kneel up', kneel up on the back of the horse. Then when we say 'let go' just let go - don't worry, you will be on the rope".

I thought he was joking, so didn't take this seriously at all.

So there I was , after an undignified scrabble with the help of clowns, on this horse with a belt round my waist attached to a rope which went up to the top of the tent, cantering round the ring - no saddle, just a blanket, nothing to hold onto, and then attempting to kneel up! They shouted 'let go' and I was swinging wildly in mid air, very fast, in big circles above the heads of the clowns. DP said I swung right round the ring 3 times. Eventually the clowns kept bumping into me and brought me to a halt - but I still hit the ground very fast.

I was literally weak-kneed walking back to my seat, but put that down to adrenalin - I was actually shaking.

By last night I couldn't walk, bith knees are swollen and agonised, and one is all black down one side . Am still hobbling this morning, can't drive, DP had to take DS to school on the bus.

I feel such an idiot!

But that is quite extreme audience particpation, isn't it?

oh dear but that's hilarious!!

hoxtonchick · 25/09/2006 10:24

you nutter blu

Marina · 25/09/2006 10:24

That's terrible blu (and terribly funny the way you tell it )
Send dp next time FFS.
What did BoyBlu make of all this? Are you a heroic mum today or a loser mum?

Tutter · 25/09/2006 10:25

if you were in the states you'd sue

Marina · 25/09/2006 10:25

I nearly put nutter too hoxty but she knows where I live

Blu · 25/09/2006 10:29

DS wouldn't talk to me! I'm not quite sure why - he said it was 'stupid'.
DP is aghast that I volunteered, and keeps laughing his head off, but has been quite sympathetic and hasn't moaned about taking my stint on the rota.
I only did it because DS was disappointed that the clown-sheepdog act he remembered from 3 years ago was not on the programme, and i thought it would cheeo him up.

And, I was bored beyond belief with the performing budgies, and somehow forgot myself!

i am safe in the anonymous depths of east london marina .

KBear · 25/09/2006 10:31

Were you on video? Could you get £250 from You've Been Framed perhaps? To buy crutches?

Marina · 25/09/2006 10:31

I asked because I suspect my ds would have cringed at the time and been scathing afterwards, esp. if I had crocked myself.
Ungrateful little sod.
Mind you, if there were budgies as an actual "attraction", I am not that surprised you felt in need of livening up.

Marina · 25/09/2006 10:33

I can tell her where NQC lives though, and she can hobble over there, stake out the premises with her silver-topped ebony walking stick (can't see blu on a grey plastic A & E crutch) and wait til you visit...

hoxtonchick · 25/09/2006 10:33
Blu · 25/09/2006 10:45

Sadly / Luckily dp did not record it in any way!

LOL - Ds offered me his Willy Wonka walking cane! he was a bit more excited about it this morning - I think he might actually have been worried yesterday!
in case any other MN-ers wish to try this out

Oh yes, the performing budgies...a highlight

you were just left to go back into the audience without having your injuries checked out by someone, Blu - do circuses not have any health and safety procedures for audience participation. You've put me right off offering to be a knife-thrower's assistant next time I go to a circus . I hope you feel better soon.

NotQuiteCockney · 25/09/2006 11:24

Blu, there are some things you can do to speed healing, if that helps?

Or is this not that sort of thread, this is a "call you a nuuter and laugh at you" thread?

(Please don't stake out my house!)

UrsulatheSeaWitch · 25/09/2006 11:30

I am v v impressed that you volunteered, Blu (wondering why you thought the bloke was joking though - this is a circus we're talking about!)

Hope knees are soon usable again - meanwhile I think you should milk the situation for all it's worth

I think you're a sport, and it's very funny!

But you really ought to go to the Dr and get it checked out asap, just in case there's something more than bruising there. If you've got a ligament injury, for example, you may well find that you need to go back to Zippos's for an insurance claim.

Blu · 25/09/2006 11:48

In between wincing and hobbling, i keep laughing at myself for being so stupid- so no-one will be pursued or sued for clling me a nutter!

I am seeing a physio at 9am tomorrow morning, and meanwhile am using ice packs and ibroprufen to take the swelling down. Is there anything else I should do?

(apart from avoid circuses in future in case they ask for a volunteer for the Human Canon?)

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 25/09/2006 12:00

Yeah, you're doing all of it I think. RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. And yeah, maxdose the iboprofen. (You can get topical iboprofen gel, but I think there are studies saying it doesn't actually get absorbed.)

Blu · 25/09/2006 12:11

Hallgerda - had I given in to temptation and had a go on the bungee-trampoline thing at the H G Family Fun day on Saturday, my dangerlust might have been satisfied and this might never have happened!
(I was looking out for you! - batters said she glimpsed you in the distance!)

OP posts:
Hallgerda · 25/09/2006 12:49

Yes, I was there with all three children. DS1 and DS2 had a great time on the bungee trampoline, but DS3 and I gave it a miss.

2plus2plus1 · 25/09/2006 12:59

What are you going to put on your sick report?!?!?!?

lucy5 · 25/09/2006 13:01

Sorry but hehehehehehe, hope you feel better soon and hehehehehehe!

3andnomore · 25/09/2006 13:05

OMG...sorry, but I did laugh...but very sorry that you have sore knees, sounds really bad...!
Definately agree, very extreme audiance participation there!
Me and ms went to circus on Saturday and the audiance participants were a bit luckier then you..however, there was a slightly overweight bloke and they all had to do cartwheels and he fell, it looked funny, but also was probably quite painful!

Blu · 25/09/2006 13:12

I'm the boss, so don't have to write a sick note, but I have had to e mail the staff and tell them I'm not in - they are all sending witty e mails to each other.....

Actually, I am supposed to put a note in the file, I shall put 'Collision with Clowns' or 'Making a Public Spectacle of Myself Related Injury' or 'Reckless Circus Stunt on Horse'
