What would be a great present for someone going to university?

My lovely babysitter is off to university next week (sniff). She'll be living in a Hall of Residence with a shared kitchen and her own room. What would be a good present to get her? I didn't go to university and was 18 a veeeeerrrryy long time ago, so any ideas gratefully received .

Some expensive room fragrance (Jo Malone type stuff)

I successfully fought the temptation to buy DH's nephew a copy of the River Cottage Cookbook - the advice on keeping your own pig seemed very pertinent to student rooms. Got him How to Eat by Nigella Lawson instead iirc.

bottle of champagne. Her neighbours will love her from day one.

has anyone mentioned a packet of jonnies? very embarrassing buying your own you know...

When a friend of ours went to uni just as we were leaving, we made her a student survival kit. Basically it was a box filled with:
*Miniature bottle of wine for peniless need a drink emergencies
Condoms Stamps TeabagsParacetamol (hangovers)
*Tea towels
*Cheap flip flops for use in communal showers
*Sticky labels and a marker pen (for food in communal fridges)
*A lighter
*Screwdriver with interchangeable heads

and a few little fun items we knew were personal in-jokes between us and her

FANCY DRESS!!##Ideal Present for starting University!!

An old thread I know...but the majority of students have many fancy dress events to attend, -so one fun present is choosing a couple of outfits for them online - to take with them or send when they arrive at Uni -TakeawayCostumes deliver them in a pizza box! - they are great fun to receive and they can top up as they go along for the other events organised throughout the year! :) I got one for my son and he loved it !
