Fuming at family planning clinic - should I put in a formal complaint?

Went to the family planning clinic four months ago and had the contraceptive implant put in but it has given me PMT from hell, so I went back a month ago and asked for it to be taken out. The nurse I saw told me:
"You can't have sex for seven days before it comes out and condoms are not considered good enough contraception for those seven days"
BECAUSE:
"as sperm can live for up to seven days you can get pregnant when it comes out if you have had sex in the last seven days and this implant can cause birth defects so we would have to advise a termination"!
She also gave me the mini pill and told me to take it 3 days before I came in to have the implant out.
I of course got very stressed so we haven't had sex now for about 12 days, just to be sure
I went in today to have it taken out and the doctor told me that it doesn't cause birth defects (in fact the same drug is given to some women to prevent miscarriage).
Also, I only need to start taking the pill today (not three days before) and that the mini pill she prescribed me is the same drug as the contraceptive implant, but a higher dosage, so would make my PMT worse!!!
The doctor clearly took seriously what I said about what this nurse told me but I am still so angry. Should I put in a formal complaint?

P.S. And its a training center so this nurse was teaching someone else this as well!!

i'd have just kept schtum and said i was celibate at the mo' from relationship down.

but i've had to lie to healthcare 'professionals' to get what i need often enough.

the thing is she told me it could cause birth defects, which it turns out just isn't true!! How could they allow her to practice there if she is so wrong about things like that!

yeah, that's bollocks. i'd complain.

AnguaVonUberwald · 05/09/2006 16:02

and this PMT has been really bad - like depression and lasting for up to two weeks! so for her to prescribe a STRONGER version of the same drug!!! I still can't belive it!

I'd stop taking the mini pill

It drove me spare, that thing.

It sounds like it put you under a great deal of stress, so I think I'd put it in writing to the Pratice Manager and see how it goes from there.

Is it possible she was a (very ignorant) trainee, rather than a full on memeber of staff? No excuse obviously, but slightly less worrying.

Totally off topic, very cool Pratchett name btw.

AnguaVonUberwald · 05/09/2006 16:08

Now on the combined pill expat, as that apprently shouldn't cause as much PMT.
Serenity, she was actually a trainer. She had a trainee in the room learning from her!
Thanks on the name, I nearly used Cheery Littlebottom but chickened out at the last minute!

Well, I'd have a slightly different mental picture of you if you had Angua/once a month PMT type thread works quite well too!

Very shocking that she's a trainer, makes you wonder what else she's told people.

AnguaVonUberwald · 06/09/2006 09:24

Good point about the Angua/pmt thing, hadn't thought of that.

I am so angry at this woman at the family planing clinic. I think it just took me till yesterday evening to get over my shock! I am going to complain formally, and in writing, simply because I want some kind of assurance that they will stop it happening again!
