Have you tried the HMRC website - pretty sure they're all 0845 numbers now

I tried to contact mine without success and had to go in there , they said they stopped taking telephone calls and you had to go in and book an appointment which is pretty bad in this day and age.

I think if you go online to do your self-assessment you can start from scratch without a reference number (using NI number). One will be generated after the application.

You need a user ID and PIN before you can do it online. Have you got last year's papers?

All of HMRC is contact centres now, and the number depends on where you live. Try here
