I would get two - no more hassle than one to look after and they are sociable animals and would enjoy each others company. We've got two boys from the same litter ? apparently if you get one boy, then introduce another later, they can fight. Apart from a bit of adolescent "mounting" behaviour that was a bit of a pain in the early months, they've settled down to a companiable middle age.

How old is dd? Ds was six when we got our two, which was a good age for not being too jumpy when handling them and being able to help (a bit) with the cleaning out and feeding, etc. Having said that, now he's eight, he hardly looks at them from one month to the next, since they haven't got wheels and can't be operated via a remote . Suspect a girl might be a little more nurturing, though .

Guinea pigs are great! Fab pets for kids, they make such amazing noises.
They like being together so I would get two, either males or females, just dont mix them up as they are VERY easy to breed!

I had 1 to start off with then went back aweek later to get her sister because she was very lonely they are great make sure you hold them lots else they are very timid

my two female rabbits started fighting when the reached about 8 months. (and they are sisters! typical).

i went to a guinea pig village the other day, they are so cute, when they drink they sort of arch their necks back. ahh

We had guinea pigs for ours from when they were tiny as they NEVER bite or scratch unlike bunnies who can be vicious!!

I had 2 boys and they were great together - go for it your little one will love them

jollyfolly · 29/08/2006 20:39

they reccommend that you get two as they like the company.... i had two and one died after about 18 months and the remaining one did not stop squeking and complaining until we got another to replace it... happy as larry now!

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 21:05

hey not all bunnies are vicious

We had two brothers together and when one died we got another older boar to keep the remaining one company. They got on straight away and there was no trouble at all. We did have one on his own for a while but he lived in the house so had plenty of company and stimulation. I don't think I would want to keep one on it's own outside, would seem a bit cruel.

I love guinea pigs. I love the way they 'talk'.
