Can any of you music download experts recommend me a trustworthy site cheaper than 79p per single?

Following on from the 40th birthday thread, I love the idea of making a CD for our friend's 40th, but 40 songs @79p each would work out rather expensive and I wondered if there was a cheaper way of doing it?

I've heard Limewire is excellent AND free but no personal experience - I'm a bit wary after troubles with Kazaa but I'm sure SaintGeorge uses Limewire .....

UrsulatheSeawitch · 28/08/2006 23:00

Any free P2p sites will let all sorts of rubbish into your PC I believe, Aero.

How about borrowing CDs from lots of people (or libraries), downloading them onto your PC and then burning them onto a CD?

Aero · 28/08/2006 23:00

Yes, just looked at Kazaa and initially looks good, but on further investigation, found a review which suggests otherwise and your post just about confirms that!

eek ursula - Kazaa now have my email addy, although I didn't join..............

That's a good idea, but I have a very short time (5 days) to pull this off (else he gets a bottle of red and a card ), and I've never done this sort of thing before. typically dh is away on business from tomorrow until Friday night.

I wouldn't use Kazaa, we do use limewire occasionally but you do need up to date anti virus and be suspicious of files that all ahve the same size or are suspicially small. The message boards are useful on limewire as a mean sof alerting yourlelf to the pitfalls. The qulaity can also be variable, I tend to use napster as it is less trouble.

airy · 28/08/2006 23:07

Maybe if you listed all the songs you wanted for the cd, mumsnetters if we have any can email them to you??

Aero · 28/08/2006 23:08

Am I likely to get all sorts of rubbish now? And can I remove my email from their list......fast?

OP posts:
Aero · 28/08/2006 23:10

airy - that is certainly worth a try.

Would I be doing anything illegal by copying and pasting the list from another site?

Joolstoo · 28/08/2006 23:10

I think the problems only begin when you start downloading stuff.

I thought it was brilliant at first, got loads of tunes, dead easy to use - then I started getting loads of dodgy pop ups and viruses - I had to have my pc rebuilt!

airy · 28/08/2006 23:10

I wouldn't worry as long as you havn't actually downloaded kazaa. If you do get any emails from them just put them straight into your junk folder if they didn;t go there already and don't open them

airy · 28/08/2006 23:12

I don't think so Aero. Not an expert though.

Aero · 28/08/2006 23:12

Blimey JT - I hope nothing like that will happen - I'm such a technophobe, so wouldn't know where to start if the pc went belly-up!!

OP posts:
airy · 28/08/2006 23:13

Really don't worry Aero. The only way it can put things onto your pc is if you download anything.

Aero · 28/08/2006 23:17

Might have to start another thread to draw attention to this and keep it bumped. Have to say I'd be well chuffed with myself if I could, and if I can't pull it off this time, I have a few years to prepare one for dh's 40th!! lol

Aero, I don't think we have any of those in the house but will ask the kids

Aero · 28/08/2006 23:32

hey aero, great idea for a mix CD, where did you find out what was the no1 each time. I'd like to do one of those and it would work for me and DH as we both have the same birthday!

I don't use limewire Jools, you must be thinking of someone else.

I rarely download but when I do I use a service provided by my ISP.

airy · 29/08/2006 00:04

emailed you back Aero
