actually, if i mash the cable a bit and then sit perfectly still it is okay for a couple of minutes but it's obviously on its last legs and has been for a while. it's a dell inspiron 510m, and the cable that i need is the bit that goes from the power pack into the back of the computer. is it the sort of thing i can pick up at PCworld or will i have to pay a fortune to dell?

i suspect its "fortune to Dell" option....

Oh no! You'll have to do H O U S E W O R K instead!!!!

PC World do sell 'generic' power cables but they don't fit all pcs
btw have you seen this about Dell batteries?

aitch71 · 27/08/2006 23:11

thanks rustybear, i'll check out PCWorld. and yes i did see than announcement. i was thrilled cos i thought i'd get a new laptop and solve my cable problem... but no, mine isn't going to go on fire unless i light it with a match.

i had this, the power socket had collapsed, it cost me £267 to get a bloody socket refitted in my sony vaio, i hope it isnt that

it wasnt recognising i had the laptop jacked into the mains, and so the battery ran dead

if it feels loose when its jacked in its more likely to be the socket than the cable

there's actually a dirty great tear at the bit where the cable meets the plug bit which goes into the computer and the metal wires are hanging out in a clump. it does work when i press down on the metal bits but basically i think the technical term is 'gubbed'. i think it would be cheaper to replace my laptop at that price, lou.

yeh ikwym, but not in this case

i found a man at my local who fixes them for a living now, so if something goes wrong next time he will do it cheaper for me, he said
